Crash Commando Review - 8/10
Recently released on the PSN I’ve just come upon this little gem of a game, think of it as a full mini-game and then you’ll be wildly amazed by it. This shooter takes you in a zoomed out role as a small soldier with a choice of a small set of weapons that although is small is more than plenty when you actually jump into an online game, or offline play.
This 2.5D platform like shooter uses quick action in small – medium sized arenas to great effect, it spawns you at a point in the arena: I say 2.5D as its 2D until you use a gun turret where it changes smoothly to a side view making it in a way 3D but also you always fight in the foreground with another side of the arena in the background to get to the other-side of the battle you must use the switch side tunnels spotted along the arena. After loading the map you’re given the chance to choose your gear; from grenade launchers to snipers, mines to knives to choose from my favourites being the C4 or the Shotguns.
Primary weapons have the most variety, to aim with these you use the R3 stick and fire with R1 some of those are the grenade launcher, assault rifle, shotgun, sniper or rocket launcher all have their own feel, range and damage to inflict which enhances the game play, as all players can find a weapon that suites their style of play. The downside being only one can be carried at one time.
The secondary weapons (used with the square button) leave a little to be desired for choice-wise between a knife and a pistol which I’ve not found a use for unless someone re-spawns in front of you when the knife becomes useful unfortunately from this point of view, it rarely does.
The explosives section is more fun to play with but is limited to only 2 of one type, mines, C4 and grenades are the choices all thrown with R2. Mines and C4 are great fun but sometimes seem to have little damage effect unless the player is directly on top of them, and grenades never seem to blow quite when I want them to but this could be as I dislike them I haven’t used/practiced the timing, I say this as I’ve seen on numerous occasions myself being blow into pieces with the same satisfying red splat that you see when your enemies are killed.
The game does what some games only dream of turning a “I’ll only play for 10-20 mins” into an hour with ease at times, when you kill people and the splat with blood you feel like you had a mini victory in the kill and yet when your killed you seem not to mind to much due to the low time before spawning that puts you straight back into the action. Occasionally you have to go hunting around the map for enemy to kill but with the hand addition of BOTs you can top up the games to make them full.
Last things to add has to be of the vehicles tanks and jeeps are great fun and with only a few per map and easy to take out the battle isn’t unfairly balanced with them added. Lastly the jet packs are a nice way to make getting around the maps simple and speedy meaning action never is far away.
Conclusion
Good:
+ Quick action means it’s never boring
+ Primary Weapons all different and good to use
+ Simple controls
+ With easy game play means pick up and play option for casual to serious gamers
+ Great Way to pass a spare hour
Bad:
- Secondary weapons aren’t much use
- Single player only good for tutorials
- Although passes an hour well not much more time in the one sitting
Graphics and Sounds: 8/10
Looks and sounds good, nice textures in places not up to big game graphics but defiantly for a PSN game and the sounds guns and blast all are quality sounds.
Game Play: 9/10
Fast, quick action, killing one minute killed the next then re-spawns and off starting again.
Overall: 8/10
Good solid mini-game, good for short sittings for the price if it’s what you’re into well worth it if your not sure try it round a friends.
