i'm going to try it at my dads work sometime in the next few days...but then if that doesn't work i'm taking it back to harvey norman and getting them to order me a new 60GB one...they told me that they'd still be able to get them on special order when i bought mine....

Formatting the HD wont make a dent on the installed firmware. The Firmware is contained on the chipset of the PS3 not the HD (this is why its possible to swap HD's and still have the console boot).

It is more likely that you have encountered a bad/corrupt data block during the installation of the firmware (yes Bad data blocks happen even on solid state writes), and if I was you I'd be looking into a replacement console.

Good luck in your dealings with Sony, in my experience they have never been pleasant.

1st 10% took half an hour, and then next took 20 minutes....20%-60% took 48 minutes.

once it hit 60% it started to speed up and i thought "thank god" and then it hit 75% and died.....

i've had it, i'm not even going to unpack it from the box again (i packed it back up for transport) it's going straight back to Harvey Norman in the morning, and they can give me another one...hell I'd probably even settle for a 40GB cos it would at least come with 1.9 (i presume)...

i'm off to vent somewhere....

Usually firmware updates are very straight-forward. I have a 60GB PS3 and had no issue updating it, which is why I believe you are dealing with a faulty piece of hardware.

Either way a replacement from Harvey Norman's should take care of it. DOn't let it colour your opinion of the Playstation 3, it is an excellent machine, and you will have a great time with it when you get it sorted.

- the rarest form of chron's disease that hasn't really responded to any drugs
- and now one of the 0.09% PS3 failures....

whoo....

also when i bought it i had this nagging feeling that i shouldn't register it straight away....now i know why...lol

and once they work it it won't work then they said they'd swap it...

and they apprently have heaps of 60GB ones, but they said they're all from the same batch and may all be dodgy

they got the new one in and worked out the other one was indeed faulty by trying klue's disc in another faulty one they had (dodgy disc drive) and it worked...so yeh i'll be picking it up in the morning as they rang at 4:15 and shut at 4:30 and it takes us 15 minutes to get there....lol
