Playstation 3 Software & Firmware \ Graphics VS Game Length

There seem to be a few games coming out that can be completed in a few hours, and it seems like game companies are putting so much effort into the graphics of the game, and trading this off with the length of a game. I had two people cancel their orders for Army Of Two this morning because they watched a youtube video that basically said the single player version of the game only lasted 6 hours.

I took Frontlines: Fuel Of War on the 360 home yesterday, and finished it in the day. It was good, not COD4 good, but still enjoyable. But I'd have felt ripped off if I had to pay $100 for a game to be finished in a day. Medal Of Honor Airbourne was another that was over almost as soon as it began. Even Uncharted seemed to be really short.

In contrast, Rainbow Six Vegas seemed to last ages.

What do you think? Do you think the game companies are putting too much effort into the graphics, and churning out games that are too short?

I think they should balance it out, so a game is long, but still has good graphics...like Oblivion!

I think it's a bad side-effect of HD graphics. To make a game look any good on the Ps3, a HUGE chunk of the cost of the game has to be dedicated to graphics. It's kinda like the cost per hour. How much money it takes a developer to make fantastic HD graphics for 1 hour of gameplay. I guarantee it's 10x the cost of the previous generation and probably takes 5x longer to make. Since game companies are about making money and releasing as many products as possible, and they only have a certain time-frame to do it, it's only logical games would get shorter cause more of thier time-frame is being spent of graphics. Unless of course you are willing to wait 2+ years for a game or just get constant delays.

This is EXACTLY why i prefer the Wii. I'll get a Ps3 this yr no doubt, but since the Wii is overclocked GC hardware that developers are already familiar with, they can churn out better-than-last-gen graphics in a shorter amount of time and have more budget/time to make the game longer. Zelda and Metroid Prime 3 are both 35+ hour games, in fact most of the games i own take more than 20 hours to finish. If a game takes less than 12 hours to finish, it's a waste of money IMO.

Yeah its true that graphics take up a lot of room on the disc but that is why they use Blu- Ray disks.

Its not just about room on the disk, its about HD graphics eating up most of the time and money developers have to spend on games. Big games like MGS4, GT5, and FFXIII have the massive financial backing to make the game long, and make the graphics unbelieveable too. Not all developers have this kind of money to spend on a single game, especially if its a new franchise because if it flops, then they'll almost never recoop the costs. So most developers have a very standard budget/time-frame to make the game and since the cost of making HD graphics per-hour of gameplay is 10x higher than last gen, games will naturally get shorter and need multiplayer to compensate.

Yeah i wouldn't have paid 80 bucks to buy Call of Duty 4. It felt so short...like a third the size of CoD2 or 3.

Dunno what graphics have to do with it though...they license graphic engines so they don't have to build them.

Was surprised with CoD4 actually....some spots look awsome others look average. The textures were pretty low res too.

They have never come out and admitted it....but supposedly it's just a soupled up version of the CoD2 engine.

Wouldn't surprise me

I'm playing Supreme Commander on my pc at the same time....it's taken me months to finish....and it's so draining. Now that is worth 100 bucks

Yeah thats very true. I think thats why Heavenly Sword is so short. They used 10GB of the space for music and it has very good graphics. Luckily it was a success though. Also they made a sequel to it.

I agree with what you said Foetoid. I just sold my Wii, I wasn't using it as much as I hoped I would, except for Wii Sports. But what really upset me there was the whole Medal Of Honor multiplayer debacle. Nintendo and EA ripped us off, and I lost a lot of respect for them over the treatment of Australian consumers.

COD4 single player campaing was so enjoyable I didn't mind in the end about the length, the quality was supreme! And I have never got as much online play out of a game as COD4 either. I personally thought the graphics were awsome in the main.

COD4 is so well done I've played it through three times now, which I've never done for another FPS... That said I do wish it was two or three missions longer...
Compare this to Half-Life 2 which for me dragged on and on and on and on...

Don't forget COD4 has a really well online aspect as well...

yes, i agree that games you finish in a couple of hours is money wasted.

take zelda: tp (the wii one) for example.. i played that, i played it the next day, the next week, the next month even..

take heavenly sword, and its finished in one night.

cod 4, finished in one night (but the online makes up for it).

even drakes fortune, there honestly isnt much in that. you finish it and you're left with a game that has no multiplayer or anything of such.

but at the same time its best we get through a few games quick rather than wasting even more of our lives on em

Yeah i dunno what happened to the multiplayer aspect, and why we were the only country in the world to miss out. I probably use my Wii too much, to the point where it annoys the missus lol. I've got 35ish games for it split between Wii/GC/VC games and i dont have enough time in the day to play them all. I surprises me every time to hear about people selling thier Wiis. If i can find 35 worthy games (and i am quite picky) than anyone can.

i think that the games out now just focus on the graphics, not the length. take lost for example, good graphics, 5 hrs and youre done, but with call of duty 4, 6 hrs or so and your done on single player, forever on online

I'm the kind of guy who has to complete single player before I can move on to play multiplayer so I appreciate a short and sweet single player campaign, although if there is no multiplayer then yeah, I’d want game time to be slightly longer, although with that said, I also don’t want the game to last for ages because most probably I’ll end up getting bored with it and leaving the game uncompleted. So I guess there’s both positive and negative aspects associated with short/long game time, but in my opinion, you can’t go wrong with a game that’s 12-20 hours in length.

Yep I think MGS3 and Ratchet and Clank were perfect around 12-20 hours of gameplay, but I gotta say I remember playing Jak and daxter 2 which went for near 40hrs and enjoyed every minute of it. I think games that last 5 or 6hrs with no decent multiplayer are worth an EB rent unless you're a major fan of the genre.

But then again most of those short games get high review scores , imo that sucks because they dont have multiplayer and an absolute waste once u are done , i think resistance is perfect , about 12 -15 hours game play and excellent multiplayer with great graphics top notch mate

Wait for a game to be release - get excited
Buy the game - get realy excited
Finish the game in a day - feel cheated

Even though the graphics for games are top notch, I would still rather gameplay length. But I wouldn't want the graphics to get cut to ps2 graphics.

ahaha I am selfish.
