Pure rumour. But it sounds feasible don't you think?
Why else would they remove backward compatibility from the 40GB PS3?
I heard it was because people were still playing PS2 games on the PS3 and Sony was losing money or something
They only took ps2 playback out of the 40gig units to make them cheaper. As they still have parts from the PS2 inside the 60 and 80 gig units. So to make the 40 gig units cheaper they took them out.
but I hope this is true as it would be great to get some of those PS2 game's i never got around to playing.

Yeah unfortunately i never got a PS2 before so i missed heaps of good games. I was 10 at that time when the PS2 and Gamecube came out so i went with the GC because i though PS2 games were too bloody and violent.

Ahh, yes wise choice. Ratchet 1, 2, 3 and Gladiator (I think it was also known as "Deadlocked" or something?)

Awesome news, if true.
By the way, I made my thread for nothing. In the future, I should not waste my time providing people with news.

Not wanting to brag, but I predicted this. Solves the PS3 BC issue with 40GB units and creates new revenue source for SONY...win/win.

There was that other rumour about a new firmware update which re-enable software-based PS2 backward compatibility on the 40GB consoles.
Rumour though. So ... *shrugs*

Finding room to store these large PS2 games in our standard 40-60GB HDDs might pose a problem for the people who aren't ready to upgrade to a 320-500 GB HDD.

Has anyone else noticed that when you play PS2 disks on your PS3, the screen is much smaller?

Just go to game setting and upscale the screen for PS2 games options.

I cant see them doing this, without having a way for 40g ps3's to be able to play. They would alienate a large chunk of ps3 owners by doing this.

Sony already denies PS2 games for PSN
Sony has already denied the rumors regarding PS2 games for the PSN. Sony's Patrick Seybold, director of corporate communications & social media, spoke to GamePro: "I'm not sure where the image came from. At this point, we haven't made any announcements, and there are no plans for PS2 downloadable titles on PS3."
Take Mr. Seybold's answer for what it's worth -- an honest sounding, and somewhat surprised, reaction. We don't know what to take from this and perhaps we shouldn't read into it any further as there's nothing really left to go on. Then again, the image in question belongs to the UK store while Mr. Seybold is with SCEA ... hmm. Anyway, it is an interesting response to say the least. It is a very different answer to the usual robotic auto-reply "we do not comment on rumors and speculation."
