I am having lots of issues trying to get online on my ps3, i have tried many different methods of connecting ie. with an ethernet cable straight from the computer to the ps3 (usb modem has no connectivity), Straight wireless. I have made sure firewalls are down. Wirelessly the ps3 is picking up the network but only at 15%. My ps3 is only about 15 metres away from the mac/modem.

I am pretty hopeless with the networking so I would really appreciate it if someone could shed a little light on what might be going on... or not in this case.

A hardwired connection via an ethernet cable from your modem/router should pretty much install itself, so this is the best and easiest approach to get it working. If that doesn't happen there must a more serious issue that you might need onsite help with.

I had mine set up wirelessly for a while (but with no wireless WEP, etc protection in place which made me nervous) but I wasn't happy that I was only getting about 65% connection quality (within 10 metres) so I moved the PS3 to our small TV room (bummer) & hardwired it with a EN cable. 100% connectivity and no issues since.

There are stacks of posts & sites that deal with this topic, the official PS3 site has loads of info about set up, etc, so have a look around for some useful tips - if you don't find them here.

I dont have much of an idea on the whole setup but i do know I followed the basic guidelines and am not getting connection.

One thing I definately know is that the my new imac is sick!

Oh, one other thing... have you tried putting the PS3 & TV right next to your USB connected modem to see if you get a much stronger signal? The distance may not be the issue, it could just be the 3 mobile modem?

Not that it helps but my iMac is also totally sick!!! I'm loving it. Can't imagine going back to a clumsy, un-user friendly PC ever again.

edit: also if thats your plan I hope you use your Imac on the go often enough to make those prices worth paying

I am getting a signal so it must be able to connect somehow. I haven't moved the new imac near the ps3 yet, however on my old imac (G4 round base - no airport) I moved it right near the ps3 only to get the signal hovering between 5 - 15%.

When i connected the ethernet cable I wasn't picking anything up doing a wired connection on ps3

*edit* 6GB should cover it for usage on weekends only. But any PS3 specific downloads could hurt your allocation (especially demos, etc which are often 750MB a pop). I get through most of my iinet 7GB allowance in a month with PS3 and normal net usage factored in.

dude i think you need a router, just did some quick googling and can up with nothing solid. sounds like you may be able to share you connection through systems prefs though

1) Before you try a wireless setup, if you have an ethernet cable, plug it in to the PS3 and the iMac.

2) In System Preferences, go to Sharing, and then click on 'Internet Sharing'. From here, you can choose the connection you want to share (and I'm assuming the USB connection appears in this dropdown?

3) Now choose 'Ethernet' in the 'computers using' list box. Once done, you should be able to switch this on.

4) On your PS3, you will need to make sure the network settings are correct. For example, the gateway ip address will be the ip address of your iMac. The IP address will also need to be on the same network as your iMac. For example, if your iMac has an ip address of 10.0.0.1, then give your PS3 an IP address of 10.0.0.250 (the reason I have made this number so high is in case anything on the network is allocating IP addresses via DHCP, usually this number is high enough to be out of the DHCP range)

With a bit of trial and error, there's no reason this setup wouldn't work, it's supposed to with an Xbox 360.

I have gone along these lines before but the instructions weren't this clear so cheers and hopefully I'll get a result before long

It'll work out cheaper (including your phone line) than that ridiculous 3 deal. The only reason you would want that is if you really need internet on the move for your laptop. Basically its a snub at the whole compulsory home phone/adsl deal. Unfortunately there's alot of people out there who are in my situation and just fall into line, get something they aren't going to use.
It is stubborn on my behalf, the more people who do the same will eventually help regulate how wireless operates in australia (considering how we compare tech wise with other countries).

With new methods of communication via the internet increasing in availability, home phones will be a thing of the past. It's Telstra playing us all for fools.

Anyway guys im not gonna start hugging trees or nothin, just tryin to get online!

If the antenna on your router is interchangeable you may also try buying a better antenna for it to increase signal strength via wireless

Unwired was just a straight plug and play! $49.95 gets me 8gb with no excess fees (just shaping down to 32k after the 8gb).

As with 3 and that USB modem u got, I would try those instructions above as they sound right and should get you on track!

Its gotta work one way or the other, after all it is picking up the network slightly, and hopefully this info can help anyone else who decides to join the rebellion. The modem doesn't have an antenna.

I knock off at 10pm Syd time, will be home by 11pm, will try to get it sorted then. If I cant get it going, i'll post the errors and/or issues if any.
