Me too... I've been wanting to get back to PVR functionality, having been stuck with a plain old HD Set Top Box for a year or so. I'm definitely going to hold out for this now! One less item in the entertainment unit, and from what I read, the recorded shows can be copied anywhere.. no DRM!

This was a contributing factor to me buying a PS3.

Turns your PS3 into a Digital Set Top box recorder for taping free to air TV. The VCR of the digital era. I want it cause everything I record is trapped on my 250gig LG set top box, with the PS3 I can put anything good on an external HDD, yay!

Not really, it's part of that, but ends up giving you that funciontality. It's a HD Digital Receiver, that records to your PS3's hard drive.

I reckon! 40gb isn't going to allow for too much tv to be recorded at high-def. Considering all the games that are having to be installed, we're not going to have anywhere near the full 40gb available.

Maybe a future firmware update could fix this? Maybe it can't? I wonder if there is a technical issue recording to a USB drive, i.e. data not being moved quickly enough?

Yeah I'd consider this if I could record to an external usb drive.

My PS3's 250gb drive only has 50gb left!!

most hdtv's come with a built in hd decoder though.

You can't record obviously but you can watch hd broadcasts in High def.

You probably already have your ps3 set up with your pc for media streaming too.....in which case you can just get a 50 buck hdtv card for your pc and stream what you record to your PS3 and watch it.

$200 for what is basically a hdtv card is a bit steep

I already have EyeTV for my Mac, but I never use it. I don't have the aerial anywhere near my computer.

For the sake of not needing to use my computer just to record, and then copying things around, I'd definitely get this item.

Anyone know if the PS3 formats the HDD as FAT32 or NTFS?

From memory it's FAT32 (but I don't know where I got that from ) If so that would mean the biggest file size it will hold is 4GB.

That accounts for a fair whack of recording (depending on quality obviously), I'd still like to know that if I need more I can get it (ie Olympics, Cricket or other sport etc) without having to programme it to do it in blocks.

Any ideas?

EDIT:

Even though the ps3 is fat32 it seems to let video files bigger than 4GB go. So maybe it has a slight variation to fat32 or something but myself and many other have HD video files on our ps3's of 8-16GB's with no worries, so you should be right
