News \ Have no FEAR, a name is here

The sequel to F.E.A.R, the 2006 supernatural first-person shooter developed by Monolith Productions, now has a name, and there are no paramilitary acronyms to be found.

The tale of its creation is as long and convoluted as a Metal Gear Solid storyline, but basically it goes like this: Monolith no longer owns the rights to the name of its game - publisher Vivendi (now split from Monolith) holds the moniker in its money-lined vaults and doesn't much want to part with it. Stripped of the F.E.A.R. name (which stands for First Encounter Assault and Recon), Monolith turned to fans for inspiration via a contest called Name Your Fear.

And now, despite our Project Awesome suggestions, Monolith has settled on the name Project Origin for the next installment in the series.

"Project Origin is the name we can stand behind since it was picked by the gaming community, and this game marks a new beginning for the franchise," said Samantha Ryan, senior vice president of production and development at Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, the game's publisher. "With the consoles and the PC, we're dedicated to adding a new game dynamic to the universe and build upon what the players loved about the original game."

As if our days and nights weren't long enough, we took time out of our breakneck schedules this summer to brainstorm names for the F.E.A.R. sequel, cranking out such surefire winners as The Reckoning: Days of Blood -- Alma's Revenge, The Sequel; Psychobread: Sandwich of Doom; S.E.A.R: Second Encounter Assault Recon; F.2.A.R; and our personal favorite, Little Miss Blood Socks.

The others were a bit silly, we'll give you that. But we're seriously shocked and outraged that Little Miss Blood Socks didn't make the cut. Where's the love, Monolith? Surely Li.M.B.S., as it's become affectionately known around the office, is loads better than some of the rejected fan suggestions like Carnival of Graveyards, Psychic Switchblade and Blood Let: Drenched in Desecration.

Project Origin doesn't have a release date yet, but it's planned for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. The sequel will continue the original F.E.A.R.'s story, putting the mysterious Alma at the center of an escalating paranormal crisis that threatens to destroy a major American city.
