PS3 Online \ Help: PS3 Network

HERM says:

Hi guys, i have been umming and arring about getting a playstation3 for a few months now, and with the introduction of the PS3 Starter Pack, i finally decided to trade my Nintendo Wii in and get the PS3 pack.

I have had the PS3 for a week or so now, and honestly havent looked back. i am a mature gamer and although i loved nintendo as a kid, i think many of generation x and y have simply outgrown nintendo, which is a shame.

OK, onto my topic, i have questions on how to connect my PS3 to the internet, and before you cay that this has been spoken of in an earlier topic... if so then its usually a catfight over which brand of modem is better etc ... or written in language too technical for layman to understand. I have the following questions

1- best way to connect to internet (wireless/wired etc)
2- best type of modem etc
3- how to signup/download from playstation network/store.
4- can i download anything onto PS3 or only games?

thanks and i look forward to hearing your comments

1. Your choice, depending where you live and your preferences and what you already have...
2. Again much your preference, for a 1st time user, the basics usually do (ie. What comes with your isp's kit)
3. Very easily, just click sign up to psnetwork from the xmb, fill in the basics and off you go...
4. Psnstore has multiple content on it. Usually demos and full games, trailers, music videos and some ps1 tiles... also you can convert your own audio cds into mp3 or atrac and your ps3 will get the disc info off the net
5. You can use ps3video9.com's software to convert your movies to ps3 playable movie format...

Nice to see you move to a real next gen platform mate! Enjoy!

Welcome to the site mate, im glad you are happy with you're purchase man

My answers to your questions mate

1. Wireless *use a NETGEAR router*
2. I would say a DSL 300, as i have one and have had no issues with it, but you may want to research that one.

3. You automatically sign up when creating an account & you download from the PSN store by choosing which demos you want to buy, each demo should have "download" written under the demo description.

4. Not entirely sure about the last question man as i've only downloaded demos and videos from the PSN store.

Hope i have helped with some of you're questions man.

Cheers shadowblade, thanks for the info

i have a ADSL 1500 internet from bigpond and a standard wired modem. so if i buy a wireless router, can i simply plug this into the existing modem and then it will create a wireless internet connection with the PS3??

Does the computer have to be on if i want to use the PS3 online?

Can i be online on the PS3 and also be online on the computer at the same time?

if not what can i do to make this possible, and if so does the download speed of either the PS3 or the computer suffer because there is now two things connected?

Thanks for your reply, also any recommendations about which type/name of wireless router to by and also where from

Hrmr... I'd suggest reading a few reviews to find exactly what you want in terms of router... the router can also (often does in a good one) include a modem, then you can just replace your current modem with a router, plug your pc with cable and do wireless for ps3... depends on how far away is your pc from ps3.

In the above example, pc would not need to be left on, but the router would.

Yes, the speed can suffer depending on what you're downloading and from where... ie. Using p2p is not recommended while playing games online on ps3...

Essentialy think of it as having 2 pcs on 1 inet connection, depends on your connection and what each one is doing...
