The design is nice. Id swap my current slim ps2 for that one. Sony want to revamp their best-selling console ever. In a couple of years, and price drops the ps3 would be the new best-selling console!

The PS2 is still selling good and developers are still producing new games for it, so it would be silly for Sony to completely abandon it now if it's still making coin, and according to Sony at eGames they have sold more PS3 units in the first year than they did with the PS2 in it's first year.

You're probably right. They've dropped Ps2 compatibility to save on costs. Then they developer a better Ps2 because of the lack of Ps2 playback on the Ps3, saving more money on Ps2 production costs and making more money from the best selling console ever. Using the Ps2 as a cheap alternative to the Wii to help suffocate those amazing sales will help the Ps3 gain ground. Overall it's quite a smart move.
