Nice find Foetoid mate. I think its a silly move actually, they should focus on PS3 developments now, they're just walking backwards by doing this.

That could have very well been the move actually, i just think if PS3 is to move forward it really needs to concentrate on the PS3 developments, like geno said, millions was spent on creating this console and yet they launch a new model of PS2 when it was already selling brilliantly anyway.

The minimal differences they have made with the new Ps2 would probably end up saving them even more money on the Ps2 manufacturing, meaning more profit for the back pocket. Not enough to ofset Ps3 losses, but i can see the reasoning. Like i said, it'll backfire brutally if the new Ps2 takes away Ps3 sales, especially with the gigantic software lineup on the Ps2 and the lack of Ps2 compatibility on the Ps3.

They need to show more confidence in there console, since the release of exclusives such as Ratchet and Clank TOD and Heavenly Sword the sales have been rising quite well in Japan. So it proves if they try hard enough things will happen greatly, MGS4, Tekken 6 and GT5 will shift millions, i just think its unecessary in doing this, because as you said, it could very well backfire.

Maybe they are so confident that MGS4, Tekken 6 and GT5 will shift units that they can afford to have the Ps2 sell with the Ps3 as seperate units that can only play it's own software (besides Ps1). This of course doesn't take into account Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart Wii, Smash Bros Brawl (which is winding up to be the biggest selling game this gen) and WiiFit, all of which will take Japan by storm.

Releasing a newer version of the PS2 doesn't necessarily mean that Sony lack confidence in the PS3.
It just means they know the PS2 has a lot of life left in it, they know the PS3 is still a little too expensive for the average gamer, and like Geno said, they probably want people to buy both the 40gb PS3 and this new PS2.
We don't know for sure what has motivated Sony (apart from making money).
But I really don't think this will have any effect on PS3 sales.

I mean, think about it, if you have a young child (6 for example) you wouldn't want to buy them a PS3 for £400 when they'll probs just wreck it, you buy them the PS2 which isn't as expensive as the PS3, has the same basic function as a PS3 (ie play games) and from Sony's point of view there getting younger children hooked on consoles.

Meaning when they grow up they'll be more likely to buy the new consoles.
