Thats just the way all HDD work. Its technical but basically HD's measure a GB as 1000mb, when in actual fact its 1024mb, so it differs from what they tell you the size is, to what it "really" is.
Also the PS3's O/S and stuff is probably located on that HDD so it takes up a small portion too.

I bought the 300GB external drive off ebay piti for $170 a few months ago, a Seagate 7200rpm. Bought it thinking i needed it and up until now i basically have not touched it, now i have a reason too hehe.

Havent tried it with the ps3 yet though.

I do this and it takes over 10 minutes to lead...does any1 know why?

By the way, the PS3's HDD's actual capacity is only 55Gb. Like all media storage devices, the advertised capacity does NOT include the space for formatting. Eg a 2gb iPod nano's actual capacity is 1.8Gb

So the bigger the HDD, the more "empty" space it will need.

Mine now at 12/55 due to Oblivion putting on 4gb and VF5 putting on 2.5gb (or so...), also now added Super Rub a Dub, AC4 Demo and took off 24 chucking on 1st 70eps of Red vs Blue and all of Sealab 2021... PS3 HDD is 60GB, but some is taken up by the HDD (like stated above) and some is taken up by the XMB OS that the PS3 is running (including space reserved for FW Updates)...

hugo: No. Harvey Norman will NOT mod your PS3.

antman1011: because your iPod's HDD is pretty slow and getting an entire index is a lot of reading... It might take a while but it works!

grey_snake: Looks exactly like it does on your iPod/iTunes, including the Album Art!

ectozar: it may/may not work as the USB only supplies THAT much power, your HDD might need more power to work. My friend had no issues with a 50GB external USB Drive...

*phew* that answers most of them!
