I just sent an email to the ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) regarding what I believe to be the PS3's breac of the Australian High Court's ruling in 2000 that all DVD playback devices sold in Australia HAVE to be DVD region free...
I think that If we want the ACCC to look into this, we should all send them an email asking for a response...

I was wondering if the Sony PS3 gaming console, which has DVD playback features, would be included under this ruling? All Sony PS3 consoles sold in Australia will currently only play DVDs with a region code 4... this would seem to breach the ruling of the High Court, would it not?
The Australian PS3 will also only play Blu-Ray discs bought in Australia, due to a similar region coding system. Is this being investigated?

It may not apply to the Ps3 since it's not marketed as a DVD player one bit, they are too busy pushing Blu-Ray. Not that i care anyway, i just buy my DVD's locally when they are released and i don't have to worry.

the blu-rays only come in 2 regions (1 and 2) so yeah really who cares i mean you must have a region free dvd player in the house or a chipped ps2

Before my PS3, I had a Sony DVD player that WAS region free... Now I need to drag that out whenever i want to play an R1 DVD - I have quite a few since my old player could play them...
I shouldnt have to, since the Aust High court ruled that it was illegal...
And Blu-Rays come in 3 regions... A, B and C...

Yeah, I wish you could crack the region coding for DVD and Blu Ray on the PS3. I wish someone would, or the ACCC would force it.

Hey Klue...I'm a relatively newbie to the PS3 so only found this out last night when I tried to play some DVDs taht weren't region 4. So, like you, my (what I thought) redundant dvd player has now had to move back out into my lounge room.

well you could just rip those dvd's into DivX and then put them on your ps3's HDD.

I don't mind too much about the DVDs. There's DVD Shrink that can remove the region-coding (I own "Coupling" bought from the UK. It's a British sitcom).
It's the blu-ray regions that's pissing me off. I want to buy At World's End on Blu-ray from Amazon! It's cheaper there!

blue ray actually comes in 4 region doesnt it. where region 4 is region free.

There's only Regions A, B and C.
If it's region-free, there will be an icon that shows all 3 icons (A, B, C) on the back of the blu-ray cover.

This is a really good idea.
The more people that email in the concern the more likely/quickly the ACCC will look into it.

Ok, does that mean if I buy a new DVD player it should play any DVD?
Stupid question to some, but I have no idea when it comes to electronics. 
And don't give me a smart answer people. I've tried googling, but it just doesn't make sense to me.
