It's a program that processes scientific data for curing cancer, parkinson's disease etc for Stanford University in the USA.

All the PS3's running it link together to form a super computer.

The map shows you all of the active processors that the system is using.

When you get to 100% it means you've finished the current work unit and it downloads a new one & starts on that.

I only leave it on at night after I go to bed (so it uses off-peak electricity) once or twice a week. Some people leave it on constantly.

But you can save lives! Imagine if you're suffering from one of the diseases being researched by them; and at that time the cure hasn't been found yet due to the minimal amount of folders. That would be disastrous!

However if you contribute by just folding for an hour at least once a week, you could save the people you know (eg me), yourself and even MANKIND!

I think that's the main message being put through by those people.

You mean "Even though the things I'm doing are small, it may have a profound impact on the world."

I've been running Folding@Home ( folding.stanford.edu/ )on my computer ever since i found out about it - 6 months ago. I've also been following the overall statistics for the Project, and can say that the PS3 has had a dramatic impact on the project! Just check the official forum, theres a dedicated PS3 client thread - forum.folding-community.org/

I encourage everyone with a PS3 to participate in this project as it really will help Stanford Uni's Research. Sony would not have even looked at Stanford's Project if it was not useful! But they have invested much time and money so that one of the best value for money supercomputers (PS3) can contribute when not playing games.

There are many help guides on the forum listed above on how to get started and also tips on some of the glitches (to be ironed out with firmware updates) to get around.

My team is called Aussie Rules Footy and if you want to help build this up to something big, just type 52735 into team no. field. Otherwise there are many others teams you can join if you wish, or I encourage you to start your own team, and tell friends about the project! Remember, there is also the computer program available, so if you don't have a PS3, you can still contribute to this worthy cause!

Thanks guys - Fold on!

another good link

what the program does - you download a 'work unit' which is only a 1-10MB in size at the start, and your PS3 works on this unit for approx 8hrs, then it packs up the work unit and sends the results back to Stanford Uni.

these results have to be completed within 3-5 days otherwise they are useless (the project has to move forward with its results) expiry date type thing, so if you do fold, just maybe leave it on overnite one nite a week or whatever you see fit, rather than 1 hour a day which will result in a useless result.

So it only uses internet at start and at end = minimal use. What it does use more of is power from the wall socket, to offset the power used by my computer, i turn off a couple more lights at home when not in use. I'm also in the process of signing up to green energy from origin energy.

The points you can build up from contributing work units promotes healthy competition, so like in my above post, u can join me an Aussie Rules Footy Team 52735 or join another existing team, or start your own! It all HELPS!

mate, as much as you love your 360, and me, my Wii (not my piss, silly), the PS3 is an almighty powerhouse compared to both, 8~9 cores of CELL Processor make it a Folding MACHINE!!! But i have mentioned in the forums forum.folding-community.org/ that maybe they could try the Xbox 360 as well? Even the Wii would be useful as support processors in my opinion, but apparently not - check the post out.

Then you should quadruple mirror post on it..

Hey iddqd, this 'un is for you:

The father of the PS3 Folding@home project, Vijay Pande, publicly shared his opinions on the processing power of the Xbox 360, as compared to the Playstation 3. In an interview with Pro-G, Mr. Pande advised that the Xbox 360's triple core processor might be able to withstand the requirements of the project, but the Playstation 3's hardware is, "much more powerful." Mr. Vande goes on to state that the PS3's architecture allows computations of "up to 20 times faster" than that of a standard computer. Playing with power, indeed.

So far, the Folding@home project has produced spectacular results in the short time since its inception. Mr. Pande noted, "Thanks to [the] PS3, we have performed simulations in the first few weeks that would normally take us more than a year to calculate. We are now gearing up for new simulations that will continue our current studies of Alzheimer's and other diseases."

Hats off to you, PS3 participants!
