News \ Folding@Home MyPS3 Team

The PS3 has already made a significant impact on the Folding@Home, with PS3s providing 346 Teraflops of their CPU power, close to triple of what all Windows PCs running the program and 100 more TFLOPs than Windows, Mac, Linux, GPU, and other Operating Systems put together.

So as you can see, the PS3 really is making a difference. You may think that your PS3 won't be responsible for curing a disease, but think about it: your PS3 has over 10 times the TFLOPS (processing power) of the average computer - put it to good use. Who knows, the PS3 could be the thing that cures a disease such as Alzheimer’s once and for all. Even if you don't have a PS3 yet, it's quite cool to know that a console you support is giving something back to the world.

Please join the MyPS3 Team using the Team Number 60766

i posted 4 times because i felt a lot of PS3 users did not know what Folding@Home was, and it was easier to post something really long 4 times rather than writing 4 different long posts. And besides, it was not for the intention of SPAM! I mentioned my team, yes, so that users might join, BUT, i did also encourage them to possibly join the MyPS3 team or even start their own, like i said, it all counts! Sorry that it came off differently to you, but like i said, PS3 users need to know what this is so they can make a better decision on using it or not. Cheers

That's fairly presumptuous to go ahead and assume we dont know what folding@home is...

...im glad your here because you are so smarter and you learn stuff good.

what the program does - you download a 'work unit' which is only a 1-10MB in size at the start, and your PS3 works on this unit for approx 8hrs, then it packs up the work unit and sends the results back to Stanford Uni.

these results have to be completed within 3-5 days otherwise they are useless (the project has to move forward with its results) expiry date type thing, so if you do fold, just maybe leave it on overnite one nite a week or whatever you see fit, rather than 1 hour a day which will result in a useless result.

So it only uses internet at start and at end = minimal use. What it does use more of is power from the wall socket, to offset the power used by my computer, i turn off a couple more lights at home when not in use. I'm also in the process of signing up to green energy from origin energy.

The points you can build up from contributing work units promotes healthy competition, so like in my above post, u can join me an Aussie Rules Footy Team 52735 or join another existing team, or start your own! It all HELPS!

Try your computers as well!

I've been running Folding@Home ( folding.stanford.edu/ )on my computer ever since i found out about it - 6 months ago. I've also been following the overall statistics for the Project, and can say that the PS3 has had a dramatic impact on the project! Just check the official forum, theres a dedicated PS3 client thread - forum.folding-community.org/

I encourage everyone with a PS3 to participate in this project as it really will help Stanford Uni's Research. Sony would not have even looked at Stanford's Project if it was not useful! But they have invested much time and money so that one of the best value for money supercomputers (PS3) can contribute when not playing games.

There are many help guides on the forum listed above on how to get started and also tips on some of the glitches (to be ironed out with firmware updates) to get around.

My team is called Aussie Rules Footy and if you want to help build this up to something big, just type 52735 into team no. field. Otherwise there are many others teams you can join if you wish, or I encourage you to start your own team, and tell friends about the project! Remember, there is also the computer program available, so if you don't have a PS3, you can still contribute to this worthy cause!

Thanks guys - Fold on!

Some good news from the Folding@Home site:

3/27/2007Two Million CPUs have returned work
We have just passed the 2,000,000 CPU mark -- 2M CPUs have at some time contributed to FAH. Right now, over 200,000 CPUs are actively returning work. With the addition of PS3 donors, Folding@Home is the most powerful distributed computing resource on the planet, and for the calculations we run (parallel independent molecular dynamics trajectories), the most powerful supercomputer of any type (distributed or otherwise).
