Normal CDs will play over 5.1 channels because the amp splits the sound into virtual surround, it usually sounds like crap.

SACD is recorded/remixed in 5.1 channels and is the best possible quality short of using the original studio tapes. You can hear the full range of sounds and it is heaps clearer - no distortion.
