Resistance: Fall of Man - 10/10
Introduction:
So what is Resistance exactly? Well picture an alternative story set in quasi-WWII Era, where you run out behind a few troops, only to see them die in front of you by a series of explosions. Relentless, you push on, through the remnants of an old town, just when around the burning bus near you an ambush pops out throwing a grenade in your direction...
Or navigating your way through a ruined cathedral and some tunnels, clearing out some flak on the way, you make your way to a sniper point and in amazement stare at the battle below you of 20 (your guys) vs 40 (Chimera) as you bring up the rifle and get ready to even out the numbers a bit...
Graphics:
Well this is one department which will "WOW!" you time and time again, whether it's the heat coming from the Jet Engines of a plane that just dropped you off, or the same plane being hit by a missile and crashing into a building next to you a moment later, they all look great! All the buildings and towns are done accurately enough, trees move in the wind, bullets make accurate holes in windows and boards & only by coming real close to the wall can you see a bit of pixelation (and that's on an SD TV, I coudln't see any on HD).
Gameplay:
I decided to split this area up into a few to help explain the game a bit better...
-Controls:
Standard FPS Fare over here, the only addition is SixAxis features, which are:
Shaking the controller when grabbed by enemy or set on fire will get rid of both problems
Tilting the controller to the left brings up the map (only available in Multiplayer)
-Storyline:
Based in a loose version of a quasi-WWII the game follows Sergeant Hale in his legendary footsteps of 3 days, in his efforts to push back the Chimera (the fugly things with tubes on their backs), without revealing too much, the storyline is told through a series of Black & White Images and in-game cutscenes (in fact this game, doesn't have any videos at all, all graphics are done in-game & real time) which help link the storyline together as well as some extremely detailed scripting...
-Enemies:
The enemies are varied in the game, just by turning around the corner you can encounter anything from a standard foot trooper (the guy with pipes on the back
), to a horde of creepy crawlers (in some way similar to the Head Crabs of HL Fame), to a massive Enemy Tank, which can fire Anti-Aircraft Missiles with DEADLY accuracy... AI is great, they will flank you, bull rush you when you are in cover, and look for alternative ways to counter-attack and move in on your position. It is in fact sometimes uncanny, how they know where you are!
-Weapons:
Also very varied in this game (but we can expect this from Insomniac after their Ratchet & Clank Series), all weapons have 2 Firing modes which can sometimes be combined for an extra added spice
All your standard fare is here, Machinegun (Human and Chimera), Shotgun, Flamethrower, Rocketlauncher... But also some originals, Auger (which can go thru walls), a mine launcher where the mines are sticky and can stick to ceilings (and even each other). In addition to that you also have 3 grenade types in the game:frag, hedgehog & air-fuel... Now without spoiling it too much, you do unlock 4 further weapons and 1 more grenade type after finishing the game once, just to leave you a little bit of surprise!
-Co-Op vs. Single:
Well as I described the storyline is fantastic and battles can be extremely varied throughout the levels, in co-op nothing changes apart from the addition of extra enemies and making their AI even better
One thing to say about this game is that it does make you jump in your seat every now and again!
Sound & Music:
Full support for DTS is included (and extremely uselful) in this game. Developers have actually made all the weapons to have very distinctive sounds, so you can tell, just by a few shots in the distance, who fired them and worse yet, who responded in turn
Sound and Music are used to full extent to create a cinematic exprience and manages to do so very well, so whether you have music or are lacking it, you can be sure that it's all planned! This is definitely one of the games that wouldn't benefit from the use of your own Soundtrack... I simply cannot imagine this game without its' soundtrack. It really does a good job of immersing you into the story (especially on Dolby)...
Multiplayer:
Even though this should be a part of the Gameplay section, this part is so GREAT it had to have a section of its' own! Multiplayer in this game is AWESOME, yes you already heard that it's 40 players, but what else. Well everything you would expect of a high caliber next-gen title, clans, ranking, awards, all of it is in multiplayer. You unlock extra ways to kit your player out as you earn more "XP" by playing games online, playing in ranked games is the way to do it. All the stats are kept online for both ranked and non-ranked games. Online modes are: DM, Team DM, CTF, Meltdown (go through destrying opponents reactors) and Breach (go thru taking over reactors to use them as spawn point). Most of the maps are available in many flavors ranging from 8 all the way to 40 players, although there are exclusive small and exclusive large maps. The game does update via online as well, so let's keep our fingers crossed for more additions. Online play seems to be lag free, even over an unstable Wi-Fi Connection, you can also use a bluetooth headset for voice chat (unlike CoD 3), yes that includes your phone headset if you have one
PS. If you see a guy running around with a skull for a head, run... just run...
Overall:
AAA-Title all the way, and boy does it like to show it off! Even though I'm on my 3rd replay of the game it still makes my jaw drop in some scenes (Manchester Cathedral, anyone?) I will be playing this one for years to come, one of the best FPS I played. Full Stop. (Well at least until Killzone 2 comes out
) Really shows off what can be done with PS3 at launch!

Yup... What did you really expect... a 1?! It is the MUST own launch title of the PS3... The only reason I'm getting Oblivion is coz I already got Resistance, otherwise they'd be no question about what I'm getting
