Anyone reckon this is a good idea for polishing a 60GB PS3?

Yes, dust, moisture and smoke ALL effect the PS3.
For example a mate of mine has his in a room that has a pool table and a lot of people that go into that room smoke. I have noticed (only since getting a new PS3 myself!) that the fan on his machine is very noisy. Smoke and dust add weight to the cooling fan that adds to wearing out the bearings in the fan and making it noisy.
So I do know for a fact that smoke and dust DOES destroy your PS3 over a period of time. My mate also has an exhaust fan that pumps out the filthy smoke but obviously not fast enough.
Hope that helps and you can also get dust and smoke filters that attach to the body of the PS3.

I have recently moved house and bought a unit for my plasma and now have my ps3 in there laying horizontally. I used to have it vertical not in a cabinet. I have realised my ps3 is alot louder now... Would say sticking a little fan behind the ps3 help it cool down a bit? I cbf taking it out of there becuase it will look crap

Why bother. Most dust particles are only a couple microns across, so unless your live in a plastic bubble, you cant stop dust getting in.

Mine has its own little cover also...keeps it nice and snug

Actually, I didn't buy it from the Duty Free shop persey, I got it from EBGames! 
Because SonyCentral didn't have any in-stock! So I just had to declare it at customs and got the 10% rebate. Which didn't exactly workout to be 10% anyway! 
Sure I could've waited a little longer, but I wanted it then!

hey your ps3 is a computer....treat it like one....drop your comp what happens? spill water through it what happens? really the duriblity is common sence. Its full of DELICATE components... besides it a on average $750 machine...look after it or you dont deserve it. I worked hard for mine and will wok hard at keeping it mint and in perfect working condition.

another thing if dust is an issue....use an air compressor on very low....blow that **** out...can of air or ya mums trusty vacumm does a good job....just suck that ****e out once a month....you'd be suprised what comes out even with a crappy dustbuster

Durable enough, however if your controls are like mine and often feel the brunt of your gaming related frustration you will undoubtedly go through a few controllers during the lifespan of your console.
