Square Enix Believe Game Stories can Surpass Films
Square Enix producer Yoshinori Yamagishi believes that videogame narratives are yet to fill their full potential. While they are not quite there yet he believes that in the future stories told in videogames will surpass those told in movies and television.
The interactivity is the biggest hurdle that must be conquered in order to achieve this. "In TV, film and theatre, the creator has control over how he gives the story to the viewer - it's easier to control the emotions."
"If we manage to get over this hurdle, then I regard video games as a greater medium to provide people with deep emotional and exciting experiences," Stated Yamagishi. Unfortunately he did not offer anyways to achieve this; although it's hard to dispute that videogame plots have become more complex and in depth in recent years.
