Atkinson to Appeal Modern Warfare 2 Rating

South Australian Attorney-General and the man stopping an R18+ rating for videogames in Australia, Michael Atkinson, despises the record breaking Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Atkinson has announced that he'll be challenging the OFLC's MA15+ rating, after the game has already been released and broken sales records worldwide.

"I’ll be appealing against that classification, I think it’s wrong. [It] doesn’t surprise me," Atkinson told ABC radio."The Classification Board in Australia does everything to try to get games in under the radar. But just because the system is not being applied properly, it does not mean that the principles of the system are wrong."

"What I want the Classification Board to do is to apply the guidelines properly. What I don’t want is the extremely violent, sexually depraved, drug use games in Australia at all. At the cinema, we can stop people under 18 going in to see R18+ rated movies. We can’t stop these games that are extremely violent and depraved from getting into the home or getting into the hands of children."

Atkinson went on to further question the ability of the OFLC to apply rating guidelines correctly. By contrast, the OFLC has a reputation for being rather conservative in the gaming community.

If the appeal does go ahead, however, Modern Warfare 2 will be pulled from Aussie shelves until it is resolved and cleared with an MA15+ rating again (which it almost definitely will be).

doesnt he realise that once an r18 movie comes out on dvd and gets into the home that any child could play it?? also the ps3 has parental control to stop kids playing these games. the systems are there this guy just doesnt understand how to use them and is scared so he prevents others from using them

What the ****? As if they would get into the hands of children. I'm 14, and every videogame retailer, or videoshop asks if i'm 15 to get MA15+ games. They would be more stricter with R18 games. As if the person selling it someone would mistake a child for someone over 18, little own let them get it without their parents permission. I hope to ****ing god MW2 doesn't get banned, I still haven't even got it. Grow up, Michael Atkinson. Once again i say this man needs to look at the systems already in place that don't work! Id love for him to take a 16 yr old off the street and get them to walk in to any video store and rent or buy a copy of say " Pulp fiction" or " Trainspotting" - the 16 yr old would never be asked for ID and would walk home with the movie in hand ready to watch when ever! I'd say show people the world as it is, a sick twisted freakshow where you are the puppetmaster without front row tickets and wherever you are standing your still on the stage, removal, bans and further attempts of removal of the R18+ rating is just a placebo.
