Here's a good question... is it worth going quad-core yet?

I'm planning on building a gaming PC at the end of this year/early next year, and currently high-end Intel dual cores a are roughly the same price as low-end Intel quad cores. So whatdya reckon?

XD Crap Cleaner! I love that name! XD Just imagine what the slogan would be.

Kiah says:

Ah, crap cleaner. Isn't that the one that removes all the bundled software and crap you often get with a new computer which you don't need?

If I chose its slogan, it would so be...
"Crap Cleaner! We clean crap!"

Cherrona says:

rofl XD I love that slogan Kiah. Very imaginative.

Still scanning, getting impatient. Hurry up you stupid computer!!!

id go for a higher end core 2 duo cause unless you really want to run 2 monitors and 2 games of half life 2 at the same time its not going to give you a big performance jump.

games and programs are only now just starting to support dual core architectures and it will be a while before you see a single program splitting it self across the 4 cores.

I would wait a while with the quad core man as with all new technology there are most likely some bugs that need ironing out, also not really a huge problem but most games out at present dont really utilise the power of the quad core so it'd be worth just getting a core 2 duo atm

Avg,Ad-Aware and Spybot are great only if you update and run them aleast once a week. Another good one is spyware doctor for the goolg pack as free version works great and also avg anti spyware

Go here for free version of spyware doctor

pack.google.com and untick the stuff you do not want and just leave spyware doctor ticked

Hmmmmm... that's a good point... if I was buying the computer tomorrow, I'd go dual core... but I'll wait and see what happens. It's just that games like Crysis will be taking full advantage of quads, and the performance leap over a dual is massive apparently.

H4mmersmith, that's true as well.

yeh the leap a sizable one but I don’t think it out weighs the extra cost witch you could put to ward you graphics card or RAM or maybe a water cooling system in the end its about performance vs. price so I guess we will have to see weather the quad cores can hit a better balance with that than they currently do.

*Edit* i was just reading this rather interesting article talking about the relative value vs performance of the quad core vs the dual core if you have some time take a gander

Cherrona says:

Ok, the scan on my computer was taking forever. Seriously, just over FOUR HOURS later and it was still scanning!! Normally it slows down when scanning for Spyware (around 40% done), but it was at 47% scanning for Spyware for hours! I just stopped it. I'll finish tomorrow after TAFE sometime. I hope nothing is wrong, but I'm worried. And on top of all that, I'm getting a headache. Damn computer.

Vinzor says:

! damn that computer for giving you a headache!
take a nap

you should set the computer to do the scan over-night while you're sleeping

That makes me want to get a quad even more! xD the Q6600 is the one I'm aiming for, and it performs way better than most of the others... god, the AMD's are pretty **** in terms of graphics cards, I'm not gonna go nuts (not completely nuts ) maybe a 320mb 8800GTS? that's what they say you need to perform well with Crysis, like everything maxed at 1440x900 with 40fps...

08/27/2007 Knee deep in the dead...

longarms says:

lol yeh it did prefrom well but did you see the preformance vs vale charts the little old 3600+ toped all of those but yeh im not too worried about crysis i dont actualy think its going to be a fun game my self but it dose look verry nice

and yeh an 8800GTS is all you need to run crysis seeing as the only card that is better than that is the 8800 ultra
