The light sensor just darkens the picture, I experimented on it as well.

To answer your question Robert, LED backlighting will be used instead of the old CCFL in LCD TVs today. Basically, the pixels can turn themselves off when not needed, hence you can achieve around 500 000:1 dynamic contrast and around 30 000:1 static.

LCD technology hasn't improved much over the years: just the addition of x.v.Y.C.C, HDMI 1.3 and better contrast. LED will jump start the LCD revolution

All up though, after last night I'm more than happy enough with the black levels and colour I can get from it. The night before, when I didn't have light sensor on or power save, it was too bright overall and blacks too grey. I was wondering how to drop it back via the service menu when I stumbled across power save. And then the light sensor seems to do exactly what I want dynamically (eg, brighten it during the day, dim it at night.

So I'm very happy with it now.

Just turn the lights on dimly or have the brightness down low low low.

I was thinking more about black levels, and you know, movie theatre black levels aren't that black. Basically they are shining a spotlight through a piece of darkened plastic...

I'm more than happy enough now with the black levels on my Bravia.

And the way the promotion works you actually need the physical TV, not just have paid for it (you have to send in the serial number from the packing carton).

I'm actually lucky to have gotten mine on the 21st. That was the last 46W they had in stock, and they said they weren't going to get any more until after Christmas, and were worried that Sony would really not have enough stock to meet the demand.

Well, that is a reasonable term and condition. I'd like to know how they would police that though...

I was wondering if it would fall under my extended warranty on the TV. Probably not as it is by redemption.

They have to apply for a Sony VISA card, then purchase the BRAVIA TV using their new Sony VISA card from the Sony shop.

Then they get a free PS3. However, apparently the PS3 they get is the 60GB version which has PS2 compatibility etc?
