I'm not really the best person to explain this, but homebrew is software for the PSP, or something like that.
I think it allows you to do more than what the firmware does.
I don't have homebrew on my psp. 
So I don't really know. lol
I don't play my psp much anyway. I haven't even played Silent Hill Origins for a few days....

And yes they are worth it - technically RatedR2J has the slim psp and its cool very nice - Im transcoding some vids for it now

I got mine the day they came out in Aus, used it a few times for games... on top of the rubbish games, UMD movies are pathetic and using the web browser is like extracting my own teeth... not to mention the controls are restrictive as. About the only thing the PSP does well is porn!
Geez, I can understand your feeling if you bought it on release and haven't played it since (as you stated) - but don't generalise your feelings from back then to now. Every Sony console has had sucky games on release. Now there are a hell of a lot of great games out there I can name off of the top of my head:
- The Syphon Filter games
- The GTA games
- Silent Hill Origins
- The Monster Hunter Games
- Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops (I don't have but gets well reviewed)
- The Gundam games. From all I've read, the Gundam games on PSP have absolutely nailed it, unlike on all the other consoles. I've got Gundam Battle Chronicles which is just so much fun and is so rich.
There are a lot of great games out there.
I agree with your sentiments on UMD though. But now you can make your own vids and play at full res from memsticks - unlike on release.

I looovvveee my PSP. Its great for long car rides and Remote Play is good aswell. The only thing I found was that the UMB discs are very fragile and easy to get dirty or scratch. PSP games are very cheap now. There only like $30 bucks. Microsoft will never be able to make a better portable system.

Psp Video 9 is the one I use but there are several other free ones as well that have default settings for psp. I have gone into detail of it all a few times in terms of correct aspect ratios and codecs such as H.264. MP4 and AVC and that can get a little complicated as their are subtle differences in terms of file size etc. PSpvideo9 gets the job done nicely if you've got a proper memory card and NOT a fake ebay one (long story )
