(GTA4 REVIEW)The Godfather of Video Games!!! - 9/10
I remember the morning; I woke up at 6:00. I got on my computer and eagerly went to the Grand Theft Auto 4 site and then the first trailer of this amazing game beamed over my eyes. I was blind for the rest of the day…ok I admit I didn’t go blind but it was damn close.
Now Grand Theft Auto 4 has been delayed so many times, it hurt the massive crowds of fans each time they pushed the game closer into the next year, then we got the arrow in our hearts, the game was officially delayed till April of next year. I just couldn’t believe it, but from that time till April I spent majority of my day picking up any info on the game over the entire internet.
When April came and the release day was around the corner, Jason_rhcp and I went to EB games and pre-ordered it. We both attended the midnight launch and were one of the first people to walk out of the plaza with the game. To see all these people come to pick up GTA4 was amazing, I and Jay only thought the game was only appealing to young gamers, but we were wrong. I can say there were around about 600 people waiting in line for the game.
Now enough of my dramatic story of waiting for the game, so without further due I give you the review for Grand Theft Auto IV:
Grand Theft Auto 4 is one of the most impressive games that I have ever played in my entire life. The feel of the game is exquisite and I extremely believe that no other free roaming game will ever have as much detail or game play in a game as much as Grand Theft Auto 4.
STORY 9/10
Niko Bellic is the main protagonist in the game; he is a man that has made many mistakes and committed many crimes. After being persuaded by his cousin, Roman, he sets of to Liberty City on a ship. His cousin Roman hammers into Niko’s head about the riches, women and mansions he owns in Liberty City. But as soon as Niko sets his foot off the boat and into Liberty City, things turn bad and then they get worse. Roman is poor; he owns a crappy apartment and a rundown old taxi business. Niko is now determined to make his cousin’s and his life better and achieve the dreams that roman had lied about. But in the process many dangerous and illegal activity needs to happen in order to achieve Niko’s dreams.
The story is very unique; it’s enjoyable and is almost like watching a film. If this game was a novel I would read it over and over again.
GAMEPLAY 9/10
What’s new about Grand Theft Auto? Well you can hijack vehicles, shoot people and wreak havoc over Liberty City. “Well that’s pretty much GTA 3!” well GTA 4 is not really a step forward in the series in game play (graphic and sound wise…yes…but I will get to that later!) the game really only improves these aspects. For instance in an old GTA game, if a car was locked you couldn’t get into it, but in GTA 4 you smash the window open and “wholla!” you got yourself a car. Now the aiming has been heavily improved in Grand Theft Auto 4, it’s more reliable and doesn’t aim at pedestrians when you are in a gun fight. The phone feature enables the player to accesses multiplayer, ring in game and real life friends etc…it is one of the neatest features in the game, and the majority of players would be lost without the mobile phone. The downside to the mobile phone is Roman ringing every hour to go bowling with you…I can’t stand that! I could talk more about the features but I would have to devote an entire website to the review of its features… really its all about experiencing these features first hand for yourself.
GRAPHICS 10/10
Wow, is one way to describe the graphics, really the game is stunning to look at, you get lost in the city as if the city was real. The shadow effects and night effects resemble the day and night cycles realistically and I couldn’t ask for a better city then the big apple. Sometimes due to the shadow and sun glare the game graphics appear to be photo realistic for a split second. I will admit I have seen better graphics for example Metal Gear Solid 4, but for the shear extent on how big the game is, it forgives the laciness of top notch graphics.
SOUND 9/10
Lets get started with the radio stations, many people wont agree with me, but I believe that the songs and talk stations are not meant to please the player but resemble and symbolise the feeling of Liberty City. It also features one of my favourite songs “Queen – One Vision”.
The songs in my opinion are perfect for the game itself. The voice acting is top of the line, actually one of the best I’ve seen. Top notch stuff in the sound department.
REPLAYABILITY 9/10
The game itself will make me visit Liberty City for a number of times, but after you have got the game to 100%, there is really nothing to do. The variety of clothes is small compared to San Andreas (fingers crossed for downloadable content) and the fact you can’t spend your money on safe houses and business, is really a bummer. But you really can’t blame Rockstar, if they gave out all their features like the ability to choose the colour of your car and parachuting, the future of Grand Theft Auto will be dull and won’t offer anything new. It has the first online multiplayer in the series that will no doubt have players mainly returning back for the game. The multiplayer is the reason I gave the replay ability a 9. If there was no multiplayer then the score would be taken down to a 7.
OVERALL 9/10
Well done Rockstar! Once again you deliver a game that makes the fans go crazy for and a target for parents and politicians to shoot down!
