PS3 Online \ wired connection

hey guys my brother recently got a 40gb ps3 and has problems connecting the ps3 to the net. l've tried myself doing a wired connection and after fiddling around with the network settings finally got it to work without having to manually put in stuff.

I told my brother the same settings but there was an ip error and trying the 2nd time there was an DNS error anyone know whats going on? he has the same internet plan as me *optus* 40gb HDD and is on v1.90

i picked everything on auto, auto detect and host name to do not set and the same for proxy

make sure u use port one on the router and some routers need to be setup internally via http//YOUR.IP.NUM then put in password and pin located underneath most routers,in there u can see what set-up it has like nat type ect, hope this helps

with the older optus modems, you need to pull the power plug, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in again, whenever you pluging it into something with a different MAC address.

if u didnt understand that, i will make it easier.
1. plug network cable into ps3 from cable modem
2. pull power on modem
3. count to 30 (not 2 seconds becuase of a thing called capacitors).
4. Plug power back into modem
5. wait a couple of mins for the modem to boot up.
6. Do your settings for the wired connection on the ps3 (no clue how you have them set up at the min. You can pick the auto options)

Repeat same steps for plugging it back into your pcs.

If this works, i would recommend getting a router (i use a netgear one, and they work fine with optus). Plug the network cable from the router into the WAN port on the router (making sure you pull the power of the modem again, coz the router has its only MAC address) and plug the PC and PS3 into the ports. Both PC and PS3 will have access to the net at the same time.

its a blue lead with this clear plastic stuff on the end with wire's in it and it plugs into the back of the ps3...ethernet cable is its name

and a wireless is the wylan and it picks up the wireless signal on the router.. and it can only go as good as G...

enough info?

IF your pc doesn't already have wireless you can get wireless adaptors WITH usb pick ups for pc's without wireless network cards in the back... very cost effective, easy and can use as many things as you want. and no damn wires.

i got the modem/router/wireless. cost me $144, i got desktop strait into the modem, laptop and ps3 running wireless. but if i didn't want to spend that much i would've got the wireless adaptor out of the modem running laptop, desktop and ps3...

The only real way to test which way is better, is to use a flukey. Thats if you have a spare $15k laying around to buy those sort of networking test tools, or be lucky enough to have access to one.

a router connects a wan to a lan.
a "Wireless Router" has wireless.

The router lets you share your net to all your computers on your home network (it has a switch in it also unless you have some getto one that has a hub, which is just bad new. Never use a Hub, use a switch.) With the older optus modems you have to power down the modem each time you plug it into a different NIC which can be very annoying. well, having to unplug and plug in network cables all the time is annoying. period.

and a simple google search would have answer those questions. Hell even the netgear site would answer your questions.
