Incorrect.

120Hz = 120 fps

24fps = 24Hz

the screen doesnt slow the refresh rate to 24hz. it multiplies the frames to match the 120hz refresh rate.

the advantage of a 120Hz display is that each frame can be multiplied by the same amount (5) because its a multiple of 24, and less processing needs to be done by your display. just because the display accepts 24p, doesnt mean its any good for it (any display whos refresh rate is not a multiple of 24).

Yes, so how do you fit 24 frames into 100 frames?

In the PAL region, we only get up to 100Hz, not 120Hz (NTSC).

That's why there's no point having 100Hz or 120Hz as it simply "puts extra frames" which are really the same frames but dimmer, to make an artificial effect, or to slow down the rate of the "flickering" image to smooth the motion.

Some TVs don't have 100Hz 120Hz, yet they sitll have 24fps native and even 72Hz.

All movies are filmed in native 24fps, which cannot be displayed by most TV as they are 30fps, so you have to reply on "interpolation" or "duplication" to get the 24fps to 120fps or 72fps.

The best bet right now would be to get plasma TVs because they handle motion much better than LCDs. I don't get how people can be so sucked into the advertisements thrown at by the manufacturers:

"We have MOTION FLOW!"

"No, we have MOTION PLUS!"

"What's that? Oh wait, we have PIXEL PLUS!"

The only way to save LCD TVs from motion lag is by having less than 8ms or by using an LED backlight.

The thing about technology these days is that manufacturers are not releasing any "innovation" - simply gimmicks and "ear wowers" such as "Motion Flow 100Hz" to entice the consumers.

Look at the 9th gen BRAVIA this year: This is the Z model, top of the line (I'm questioning what happened to the X series...)

Features? x.v.Y.C.C, 120Hz (100Hz here), Bravia Engine 2 (new), better contrast (duh..), WCG-CCFL, 10-bit panel, USB port(new), DLNA(new)....

So what happened to the magical LED backlighting?

Manufacturers have the technologies that will be released 10 years later. Look at all the promises at CES, and guess what? "They will be released in 2010" - so what's the point of buying a new TV now when you can get this?

Lol! Entice Inc, has a good ring to it actually, make sure you create TV's that have triple the amount of 1080p resolution, and give the first one out to me for free Thanks man. On topic, i now have two LCD TV's a panasonic 32 inch and a 26 inch Samsung, like them both, but they are native 720p/1080i, im thinking of updating again.

If you're desperate, get them in Feb. If you can wait, get a new TV in September because that's when new TVs will come out.

refresh rate is measured in micro seconds and hz is measured in frames per second..... whats 100hz has anything got to do with 8ms for this situation.... many new lcd at 100hz have 6ms or lower and still have the horizontal jutter issue has of its hz not ms....

Pretty disappointing about the led backlighting. Although I might have kicked myself buying a TV in december if the next month some much better technology was announced. But now, there isn't any real improvements.

Gday fellas/fellarettes

thought I'd add a post in here rather than starting a new thread!

wanting to buy a new bravia tv, although I'm having a tad trouble which one to pick...

I've been looking at a bravia 37" and the 40"... one is 720p native and on is 1080p native respectively, but unsure how much difference I'm going to notice if I get the 37"... theres about $2000 difference in the 2 sets, and if I can love the 37" for 2large less while waiting for the next best thing to be released, I'm sold already.

I'm sitting about 10' away from the tv, in a smallish room, and don't want to cut off my peripheral vision (37" is a nice size and headaches not my thing!), I work(bahaha) so I don't sit infront of the ps3 24/7 but do enjoy top quality.

If i do go for the bravia 37" 720p will i regret it? will i enjoy it immensely? will i wish that i got the 40" 1080p instead?

Helpful responses appreciated, no fanboy remarks please!
cheers, chris

I have a Samsung 46" F series 1080P... so might be bias, but you can see the difference between a 720p screen and a 1080p screen with a 1080p Bluray input.
I'm not saying 720p @ 37" is not great and you wont love it, just that you can see the difference.

I had similiar scenario, I was looking at Samsung 40" S series 720p for about $1800 or 46" M series 1080p for about $3k. Then the F series was released and I got a cracker deal $3,300 46" F series 1080p 100hz, with free 26" R series 720p!

I liked both Sony & Samsung picture quality but went with Samsung as I could get a better deal. Sony 46" X series was $4k best deal when I bought. (numbers don't tell the full story, you have to view different model side by side & ask to view SD content, cause in my opinion thats where some 1080p tvs fall down, their picture engines don't scale SD well)

Also, someone talking about LED backlighting: the Samsung 70" F series uses LED backlighting. Massive cash and you need a massive room though.

I think 1080p is noticeably better than 720p on LCD.
I think 1080p is not noticeably better than 720p on plasma.

To be honest though, the difference between a 720p 37" and a 1080p 40" would not be that noticeable, because it is said by some that 1080p is only really effective in 50" and + screens.

My 2 cents.

I have a 1080i/720p 50" Pioneer plasma, and I am completely rapt with it - and I don't notice any difference on the 1080p plasma's I've studied.

I went for plasma because the lag is a problem for me, and I personally would not be happy with anything above 3 or 4 ms response.

To me, there is a difference between 720p and 1080p when I am comparing different set with the same material. Of course you can only see the difference with 1080p material especially with blu-ray movie (not much in gaming). That is just my opion. Plus I am sitting around 9 feet from my bravia X 40".

Reason I choose LCD for my apartment is:
1. I use it as PC monitor - no way I am using plasma for this (burn-in issue)
2. Power consumption
3. I live in a very bright apartment. Glare from most plasma screen won't be appreciated, although current plasma has improved on that aspect.

If you don't watch much blu-ray and money is an issue, then probably it's best to get the 720p. But that depends on you really.

at 10 feet you will need at least 70" to see the effects of 1080p if not bigger.... 37" and 40" does not difference at that distance. i wouold rather get a 50" 720p cause it will look like as sharp as a 1080p at that distance.....

i have a 70" sitting 3m away. like sitting at the back row of the cinema everyday....
