has anyone tested a standalone blueray player against the ps3? i really dont trust sony with players since the stuff up with playing dvds on ps2. atleast its smooth now.

DVDs look smoother on the PS3 than the PS2 and my Panasonic DVD player/recorder; although my player doesn't upscale DVDs and it uses Component cables, so I guess there's a problem there.

Anyway, Bluray movies look a lot more detailed than DVDs, especially the contrast in dark scenes.

Also I've tested my friend's Panasonic Bluray player and the PS3; the PS3's picture quality overall was better than the Pana, disc loading time is also a lot faster on the PS3 than on the Pana. Of course this was done using my friend's Bravia X52 - superb quality.

The discs seem to be extremely durable, at least I have found they are.

??? Upscaling does not add any new information to the film/video it just uses mathematical equations to match up with your tvs pixel count. ALL blu ray movies that were'nt shot in 1080p are upscaled\remastered before they are burnt.
Even though some film prints in particular kubrick's works upscale very well they are ONLY upscaled versions that can never look as good as true 1080p content.
