most dvd players that you buy are now region free .
So why didnt sony make the ps3 dvd region free it plays all or 4 thats it .It would made made the ps3 a lot better because I have some region 1 dvd some movies you can buy in Australia yet . but cant play them on the ps3 ?

yeah it is a it stupid. I've had a region free dvd played for years and own many imported dvd, now i have to watch them in my room on my old tv cos ps3 wont play them 
and im to lazy to swap dvd player from my room to my lounge and back all the time lol

Yeah, possible with firmware. Actually the first PS3s came out region free for DVD, and then they "fixed it" with a firmware update. Mongrels.

I just tested a Region 1 DVD on my v2.10 PS3 - it didn't work - says the DVD is the wrong region.

PS3 is class as gaming console not DVD or blu-ray players that why it region locked

Dear god, ps3 classed as a gaming console, thats a cop out if I've ever heard one. Sony should make it region free for DVD via a firmware update. My guesses are they are pushing the blue-ray functionality and forcing people to buy the new media.
The only real way around this is to backup your DVD movies onto blank discs and make them region free with either single or dual layer blanks. For a couple of dollars you'll have a backup and be able to play it in the PS3. Wonder if Sony Australia had thought of that 
- Of course this is classed as piracy and I don't condone it
