Depends on how bad and the type of damage, but I use a program called "getdataback" and it's awesome I can pull nearly anything back. You'll need a license key to use it...but that's not hard to find.
Ticking = Failing so I'd definitely take it to a PC shop and see what they can do if getdataback can't read it.
We usually put a hard drive in a hdd plastic case then into the freezer overnight. You can usually make a fairly damaged drive work for a while, but I don't recommend trying if you aren't experienced.
