PS3 Console \ External HDD

I think you just plug it into your computer, right click the drive in My Computer and then "format" and it will ask what format type do you want the drive to be - only on PC, I don't know about Mac.

It all depends what brand and size you are looking at.

I bought a 300GB Seagate external off ebay for $150, works really good. havent tried it on the PS3 yet. its formatted to NTFS and i have alot of stuff on it now so i'll probably have to grab a second one and run it FAT32 just for the PS3.

There's a Maxtor 320GB usb hard drive in today's BIG W catalogue for $188. They're on sale from the 19th to the 25th of April. I might have to pick one up...

It looks to have pretty good specs, just doesn't have a flashy case like the other ones.

I was a bit surprised that Maxtor had been taken over by Seagate, hadn't heard about that one.

It works out to $0.58 per Gigabyte, seems very reasonable. I've seen price ranges from $190-$250 on online stores.

Err if it works then you just plug it to the PS3 via the USB cable. Then it will act as a drive on your PS3, where you can put your files in it.

yer as its been said above, you need to format to FAT32. But still I wouldnt know if it would work 100% yet. Buy one and tell me so I know

I'm just wondering if when you connect a usb drive, does it behave in the same way as the PSP does when it is connected via usb?

What I mean is, for example, when you save something on the internal PS3 hard drive in the case of video, all the files are individually displayed in a list one after the other with either a default picture or the preview that you can setup for it.

But if you connect the PSP via the usb cable, a folder named 'PSP' appears at the top of your video/music list which you then have to open, which then displays the files in a list, separate to your main list, it also does the same thing with memory sticks etc.

Has any one tried any external drives to see if they all behave as the PSP & memory sticks do?

Yes, it is exactly like other portable medias. When you plug the USB in, it has its own folder(s).

That one looks ok, no-name brand but it could still be good, the specs are preety similar.

I just don't like the way PS3 displays files when using secondary storage.

Thats why I might wire a 3.5 inch drive directly into the PS3. Here's a better picture:
