Okay... Yesterday i purchased a Maxtor OneTouch III (mini edition) 80GB USB Plug and Play External Hard Disk Drive (which is powered by USB not my the power outlet at the wall). On sale from Office Works for $99.00.

www.maxtorsolutions.com/

When its plugged in the ps3 doesnt register it.

After reading this thread i decided to try to format it to FAT32 - but when i click My Computer and then right click the Drive (E:) and scroll down to format... the only file system available concerning formating is NTFS.

Does anyone else have any suggestions???

Has anyone else purchased a Maxtor HDD and set theirs up corectly - any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks..

Im a trainee computer techinician, and I was installing windows XP the other day on someone's PC and it had the option to format the HDD as NTFS or FAT32. Just google "format fat32 hdd"

longarms says:

yeh XP only runs on NTFS i think so if wont give you the option to format to fat32. you will need to find some other program on the web to do it.

liam_w says:

OK I had a look. You can get FDISK (the new version) and boot it from a floppy disk and format a hdd up to 180GB in FAT32.
ftp://ftp1.fkkt.uni-lj.si/newfdisk.zip
If you do this in DOS you will see an error while formatting, but it still formats correctly.

i read in a magazine that what you do is plug the ext hd in you ps3 and goto settings there you acn format the ext hd to use with the ps3,but this will obviously erase anything you have on there

ectozar says:

Dont worry about any FDISKing or DOS or any of that crap, you can format the drive right from windows if you go to the control panel > administrtive tools > Computer management > disk management and from there you can select the unformatted hard disk and format it to whatever file system you want.

Give it a try.

grey_snake says:

I tried exactly that...

I dont think XP can format a device in FAT32 which is larger than 32GB.

Does that sound right?

Im currently downloading Disc Wizard to see if that works.

I wanna try some of those suggestions but im already d/loading and formating so i cant disconnect right now..

ectozar says:

Hmm i cant say as i havent used FAT32 since like windows 98 but its sounds crazy that you wouldnt be able to format anything over 32GB..
I know FAT32 cant read files over 3.5gb or something like that..but i never heard not being able to format a disk FAT32 cos of its capacity..

This is a poor suggestion. Dont do this as there is no "format ext hard drive" function.

Atleast if the drive isnt FAT32.

Dont try this and risk deleting all ur content.

don't shoot the messenger, look in playstation official magazine article 'get extra memory without removing your ps3 hd by plugging in a external hd with usb connection, before you use it format to FAT32 file system not NTFS do this using your pc pr plug into ps3 select system settings.format utility,be aware that formatting drive erases data on it'

Entice says:

Just plug it into your PC and format it in NTFS, you can format the HDD on the PS3, but it's not worth the risk

i think im just gona buy a internal HDD when i whant more space
to save the hastle formating.

All done - thanks!

So your external Hard drive now works on your PS3?

I still want to be able to store the games that I have downloaded from the Sony Shop on the external hard drive. Why? coz down the track I am gonna fill up the 60gb one and I bet other people are too and deleting them and re-downloading them is a pain in the ***

07/12/2007 Planet Earth, New New York

grey_snake says:

You can just copy the games to ur storage device.

07/16/2007 Brisbane - start.select@hotmail.com

ZOIDBERG says:

are you sure grey snake?, will they still work from that or will they have to be on the internal ps3 hd to play?

07/18/2007 Planet Earth, New New York

grey_snake says:

Im sure.

07/21/2007 Brisbane - start.select@hotmail.com

ZOIDBERG says:

Have you done it? or has anyone done what grey_snake stated above?

07/22/2007 Planet Earth, New New York

grey_snake says:

Ok ill go and do it now.

You cant copy anything from the game XMB but you can copy anything from video eg. trailers.

So the answer is no you cant.

I wonder if a firmware update will fix this in the future. I hope so

I've used a 120GB Maxtor with the PS3. I formatted it with FAT32 on my PC using Partition Magic. XP won't format FAT32 larger than 32GB. If you try using disk manager it removes the FAT32 option when the partition size gets bigger than 32GB.

Now I have problems using the drive. I have a 46GB music library on the USB drive. All the tracks are WMA but don't show up on the PS3. I can see Artist folders, but inside the tracks appear as "unsupported data".

If I connect the USB HDD to my PC it plays the tracks no problem, and can even stream the tracks to the PS3, but I can't get them to show up if I connect directly via USB.

Can anyone help with this?
