Big news on the Blu-Ray front, with Wal-Mart (Big W in Aus) going Blu-Ray exclusive:

www.joystiq.com/

From the article:

"Wal-Mart declared today that it will "exclusively" back Blu-ray in the high-definition movie format war. We know there's a lot of emotions about this issue still out there, but when Netflix, Blockbuster, Best Buy, almost all of the major movie studios and WAL-MART go Blu-ray, can we finally say this is the end for HD DVD? Wal-Mart stated that "in less than 30 days" customers will see the alpha-dog of retailers go predominantly Blu-ray.

Wal-Mart's release to Joystiq also states that the company is moving "exclusively toward Blu-ray ... players." We've requested clarification as to whether this means they will no longer carry the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on player. We'll update when we get a response. What we can say is that the 10 Wal-Mart stores we did call either had no idea there was an HD DVD add-on for the Xbox 360 or said they haven't had them for a while."

Indeed, and this little rumour doesnt help:

www.joystiq.com/

From the article:

"While the writing has been on the wall as far as HD DVD is concerned for a some time now, today's Hollywood Reporter story takes that writing, highlights it in thick black ink, and draws some big red arrows pointing towards it. Citing "reliable industry sources," the entertainment newspaper predicts Toshiba will officially stop supporting the high-definition movie format "sometime in the coming weeks."

If true, the move would somewhat validate Sony's costly decision to integrate Blu-ray technology into the PS3, and would give Sony a rather large stake in the future of the lucrative HD home movie market. While the death of HD DVD would obviously be a blow to Microsoft's external HD DVD drive (and everyone who bought it), Microsoft has said again and again they are open to the idea of a Blu-ray attachment if and when that format wins out. Which, at this point, seems like only a matter of time ..."

Wal-Mart Stores Inc has decided to exclusively sell high-definition DVDs in the Blu-Ray format, dealing what could be a crippling blow to the rival HD DVD technology backed by Toshiba Corp. The move by the world’s largest retailer, announced on Friday, caps a disappointing week for HD DVD supporters, who also saw consumer electronics chain Best Buy Co Inc and online video rental company Netflix Inc defect to the Blu-ray camp. In a statement on its Web site, Wal-Mart said that over the next few months it will phase out sales of HD DVD systems and discs. By June, it will sell only products in the Blu-ray format which was developed by Sony Corp.

“We’ve listened to our customers, who are showing a clear preference toward Blu-ray products and movies with their purchases,” said Gary Severson, a Wal-Mart senior vice president. The move affects 4,000 Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club stores in the United States, as well as related online sites. The stores will continue to sell traditional DVD players and movies. The so-called format war between HD DVD and Blu-ray has been a thorn in the side of retailers, which have had to commit shelf space to devices from both camps even as they field complaints from frustrated and confused customers. Next-generation DVDs and players, boasting better picture quality and more capacity, were expected to help revive the $24 billion global home DVD market. But Hollywood studios had initially split their alliances between the two camps, meaning only ce

yeah - well at least when you release said new format, make sure its final spec.

blu ray profiles = hopeless

region coding = hopeless

there being a single HDM format so the backers can name their price on media = hopeless

you guys really dont understand the implications if blu ray will win... exactly how long do you think it will take for HDM to get to current DVD prices if there is one format? well if the backers have their way, never.

one of the reasons why region coding (though we all hate it) its that the companies that produces the blu ray has some sort control over them....

what about profiles of blu ray??????

new bd are about $40 at most and dvd around $30..... i think when dvd first came out they were more expensive then that.....

actually Jeffie i agree with you about Blu-ray profiles etc.
HD-DVD certainly had a lot of strengths.. but since my PS3 (like everyone else's) is a fully updateable Blu-ray machine i'm sweet.

I feel sorry for anyone that was silly enough to purchase a Blu-ray player other than the PS3.

Now i hope these damn movie studios would re-release all current Blu-rays with more special features and online content with the newest Blu-ray profile.
