I found some component inputs on the back of my SD tv and was just wondering if i used component cables for my ps3 if it would look any better or what not?

It would probably look crisper. Prior to buying the LCD TV I used to have a 68cm Philips TV with Component Inputs. I tried a test with AV & Component leads, and Component definitely looked clearer & crisper. It was really noticeable when sitting in DVD menus, the text was a lot brighter and clearer than under an AV connection.

It's not just about the resolution, it's how the signal is delivered to the TV. With an AV cable, you have ALL the display signals coming via the yellow cable. With Component, the video is broken up between the Red, Green & Blue cables, meaning colours can be presented a lot better when sent via the Component cables.

A lot of people will say there is very little difference between the quality of image on Component and HDMI. HDMI has the added convenience of sending video and audio through one small cable. But ask the 'experts' over at the dtvforums and you'll get many argue that there isn't any difference in the quality of picture.

I have a 68-70cm Philips TV atm.. (Only 15 years old, not gonna ask mum n dad for a $2000 plasma )..

I just had a quick look and i have the normal Red, White, and Yellow ports and an 'S-Video' port. And like a bunch of 12 ports on the back with different colors on each column.

Im not up with the whole HDMI, and TV stuff lol

So whats with the 'S-Video' port?

S-Video will give you a more clear image than the standard composite cables that come with the PS3.

But not as clear as Component.

Basically, it goes:

Composite (Red, White n Yellow)
S-Video
Component (Red, Green n Blue)
DVI
HDMI

(DVI & HDMI are no different in terms of picture quality or ability, HDMI = DVI with sound included.)

Check those coloured connectors on the back of your TV first. See if you can see a combination of Red Green and Blue connectors. If you can, then forget s-video, go straight to the component cable.

I'm spewing that DVI doesn't work for me as that's the only digital connection my LCD has, I tried a HDMI to DVI cable but it failed, it's 2 years old now. Component does the job for me and I'm squeezing 1080i out of it.

You can always get a Joytech Control Centre to let you connect several devices via component. They aren't too pricey, and work really well. Means you never have to get to the back of the TV again! :^)

Definitely better than s-video though.

Yeah, that's odd. I connected my Mac Mini (DVI) up to my LCD TV (HDMI) via a DVI->HDMI cable and it worked beautifully.

There's nothing wrong with 1080i. If you read around the 'net a bit, there are a LOT of people who can't tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p. Just because the PS3 can do 1080p, doesn't mean it's going to look better than 1080i to the AVERAGE users eye.

Interesting read there with those articles Texinick, my more technically minded mate told me there's very little difference between the two as well.
