It is not a feature that Sony put it, it just looks like a glitch. Here are some reasons as to why it is clearly not a feature...

1. If it was a special feature, why is it only in the 40gb models?
2. If it was a special feature, why does it not say this in the manual?
3. It sounds pretty loud, doing this could actually risk breaking the motor on the fan.
4. For it to actually clean the dust out, the fan would have to spin the opposite direction and I do not see this happening. It would actually blow the dust farther in.

It is no special feature, and I would not risk doing it as it could break your PS3 long term. Somebody should call Sony and ask though, find out what it actually is. I just know that I will never ever try this.

How do you know it cleaned out the dust?

People in here assume to many things..... Just because a fan spins at a high speed does not mean it magically cleans out dust....

Yes, because when you look through the vents you can really see a lot through those little little holes....

Have you ever thought, that maybe it just moves the position of the dust? I highly doubt the fan would be able to push out dust through those little vent holes.

If your console is working fine, why in the heck would you risk doing this fan test bullcrap?

What I do not understand is, why would you do this if your PS3 is working fine? It just puts it at more risk of breaking.

If your PS3 has bricked/dead and is not working, then go for your life and do this trick as many times as you like.

It would be hilarious if Sony turn around and say doing this trick can break your PS3, but then again, nobody ever listens to me.

If your PS3 works, why even bother risking it by trying this trick?

Because it cleans out the dust? If the vent is blocked, it could potentially overheat and burn out chips (or slow down your gameplay).

The thread says it is used to clean out dust, and why not? What risk is there?

Are you done having a cry yet? Because it is my ps3 after all, and it is not broken. What point are you trying to prove?

Its a repairers function, used when its being serviced, if dust builds up on the fan it spins slower thus increasing heat build up. You should be amazed that Sony has implemented this type of thing in your new PS3's. Think about Micro$ofts 360....
