I would not do anything until we get an answer from Sony, you guys are crazy for actually trying it though.
Who knows what it could be or could do. I do not have another $700 to throw around so I am not going to try it.

Sounds like it is really cranking those fans.
I wouldn't want to try this yet and burn out a fan motor you may not be aware of and then toast the ps3.
Electric motors don't last as long when you stress them like that.
You would think there would be more sensible solutions to clear dust from the fans. I don't buy it.

Hugh_Man said: Its a repairers function, used when its being serviced
Hugh_Man would be on the money i think.. Not all functions of a product are written in the manual. Who knows what special functions servicers are informed about.. unless your a servicer yourself! Haha i can't beleive the amount of doubt about this being something Sony designed and somehow its being 'hacked' or 'exploited' hahaha its a Sony made function! Think about it.. it uses a special boot routine of holding down the eject button.. this sorta method is used by various electronics to perform certain tasks that would not otherwise be performed.
I just tried it then.. it certainly does not damage ya fan.. it blew a ****load of dust out of my console! I have my PS3 wedged next a CRT TV in a home theatre cabinet.. so there is a bit of air space.. but it would pretty much just recirculate inside that small space.. so i guess a lot of dust is just recirculated through all the time. Glad i did it.. moved a ****LOAD of dust! haha

yeh i wana do it
but im not 100% sure about it yet
Im just going to go out on a limb and say that its not healthy. As the PS3 turning off and leaving a flashing red light at the front is the code for the unit has had to turn it self off because it became too hot to operate.
As for that video of the 60 gig test. I what i think is right(which it verry much may not be) All that dose is make all the heat go up to the end of the console with out the fan. And thus makes the fan have to work twice as hard to move the hot air out of the console and the cold air back in.

seems strange that just inverting it causes the fan to speed up. None of the inlet/outlets were blocked to cause such a reaction...odd.
as overheating would require more than a few seconds and a few blocked holes...?

People need to understand, just because a feature like this is included on the console, does not mean it is safe.
My car has the feature to go up to 180km, but it is not good for the car and is certainly not safe.
I would not even call it a feature yet, we do not even know what it is and what it does. It certainly does not clean dust out though, if you are looking to try this trick just to clean dust out, you will be very disappointed. This trick will most likely just blow even more dust in and around the inside of the console.

guys.. come on.. Sony built this feature in.. even if they didn't intend for the average customer to find out about it. I am in no way saying that its safe to do regularly or nothing coz yeh.. it would wear out the fan pretty quick if u did it every day.. but i think once a month or every second wouldn't be so bad.. it really seemed to blow heaps of dust out of my console.. seriously.. just try it.. its NOT gunna damage it.. atleast it didn't mine.

i've never heard of someone's consol dying from excess dust build up. Usually from something else (unexplainable).
So i'm letting mine build up, what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger!!! Plus my system will probably die from the dreaded COD4 freeze.

You bunch of wimps!
Have you never tinkered with your pc?
Never heard an 80mm (or smaller) fan spin up?
I did this last night on my 40gb, I can assure you the fans are not 'over-spinning' - they are just so loud because using this feature makes them spin to near max speed.
Im even willing to bet that if your PS3 was overheating they would spin this fast to cool it down.

yeah i would not risk doing that to any console because teh risk of breaking it in some way would be very large. the thing i would do is use a dust buster, use teh vacuum nozel with the fuzzy bristels, or try to carefully take my ps3 apart and clean it out like a surgeon would replace a heart or brain. the third one is only for people who know what they are doing as messing around inside you PS3 noggin will most likely destroy it and will not work when you turn it on. those my opinions and they all work.

There have been incidents where peoples fans go super speed when its being used normally so i agree with you that it would spin faster as the system heats or if the dust builds up. Fan speeds just remedy the heat/dust issue.

also teh 60 gig ps3 fan thing is just rediculusly stupid. just turning the PS3 will not start a fan cleaning system. and if you get a message about something bad while it is going on and some fatty says it is not a bad thing, hit him so he shuts up. he obviously does not know anything about teh PS3 except that it is expensive and you can change teh background to a gay demon slayer.
.
sorry if that offends anyone but all this crap really pisses me off.

According the french site UltimatePS3, PS3 Fan Test can damages your system, the fans speeding up is a fail safe trying to get the bottled up heat out of the system, this can burn your CPU and GPU, this is confirmed by sony.
www.ultimateps3.fr/
the only problem is its in french.
