to get the drive replaced(which is the only prob i know of with them) it'll set ya back about $150 or if ya got a technical mind then you can do it yourself and order the drive for $110
This is what ill be doin the next time it happens

Dude, Don't worry about it so much, get the most out of your system don't be scared its going to break because 99% the systems will be fine. EVEN if it did break and it's out of warranty I'm sure it wouldn't cost that much to get fixed... any one know?
99% of systems will be fine? That doesn't seem to be the case at the moment :^)
I say use it as much as you want, because if it's going to go, you'd rather it went within the first 12 months :^)
Repair though Sony is in the region of $150. Plus the approximate 4 weeks to get it repaired.
EDIT: Oops... Sorry Dukes.. shoulda checked the next page before answering!

But the facts are that the failure rate of the 360 is much higher than that of the PS3 or Wii.
Warranty provider reports have put it as almost %30 of Xbox consoles sold. Where as the PS3 is reported as being less the %1... that is an extraordinary margin, and for the price of a 360, we as consumers deserve better.
All 3 Console Failure rates:
Mate, those 'facts' you talk of from that article are a year old. You need to take into consideration that the 360 has been around a year longer than the PS3. I reckon if you look at the failure rates today, then the PS3 won't be looking as good. How can you go on about the 'build quality' of the PS3 over the 360, when these disk errors are happening everywhere you turn.
If the laser is only getting a life span of somewhere in the region of 10-12 months, then they're all going to start happening around now.
This is going to be Sony's RRoD equivalent. Let's see if they have the balls to offer those console owners a 3 year warranty like MS did. My mates PS3 died like this three weeks out of warranty, and sony don't want to know. A $1000 on something with great build quality that lasts a year?? Maybe the $399 Arcade 360 is looking a better option if the $700 PS3 is just as likely to go kaboom!

Oh wtf ...
I decided to change game disc, because I wanted to play a different game. Took out Bad Company, and inserted Rock Band.
After inserting Rock Band, the blue LED light lights up (normal) but there's no game disc icon under GAME on the XMB.
I've tried changing to Guitar Hero, Bad Company ... turning on and off ... no results.
Is this a classic example of the BD drive dead? Do I have to call Sony now on 1300365911?

The blue LED light is lit up ... and there's the continuous twirling bubble in the top right corner which indicates that the PS3 is thinking?
I'm turning my PS3 off for about an hour and will try again then.
God damnit, please don't **** up BD drive ... please don't ...
But then again, if it does ... I can get a new one for free right? It's still within the first 12 months ...

Ok. Thanks guys.
After turning it off for an hour, I've turned on the PS3 again and it still won't read any of my PS3 game discs.
I haven't tried a Blu-ray movie or DVD movie yet. I might give that a go in awhile.

Funny thing. I let my mate borrow my Xbox 360 because I had plenty of new games to play:
Bad Company, Bourne, MGS4 ...
Who would've known that my BD drive would die?
Yea, well ... even if I kept my 2nd PS3 ... I think it would've died quickly too because of that spastic fan (right?)

Thanks man.
Edit: Nope. Definitely not working. Tested a lot of PS3 games, Blu-ray movie, DVD movie ... the drive just won't read anything.
After I insert a disc, the bubble appears in the top right and begins to twirl. It just keeps twirling ... the PS3 doesn't do anything (but seems like it's thinking forever).
Restarted, resetted, hard rebooted ... nothing works. I guess I gotta call 1300 365 911 later today

Edit2: Well, it's official now. My PS3 will be shipped off to Sony on Monday morning ...

There's something else they should be looking into for me.
When I restored factory settings, I got an error message saying "please insert the correct hard drive". Something along those lines. The phone op (John was his name, friendly dude) said that (from his experience) that error message means bad news. (Out of my 40GB and 250GB hard drives, never had a problem with them before)
So he wrote in the notes, that the repair centre will fix my drive/laser and look into the HDD problem.

Well, I only got that message (for the first time) after restoring factory settings. After restarting the PS3 again (turn it off, when turning it on ... keep holding the power button until you hear the 2nd beep) ... that HDD error didn't come up!
And the HDD error message didn't appear after I did a full PS3 format.
But yea, I bought my PS3 in November last year. It's only been ... just over half a year? My poor baby ...

Mine is an 80 gig about 18 months old, but I haven't played it that much. Everything froze while I was playing Burnout Paradise City tonight. Now won't read any type of discs. Done complete reset restore etc, nothing.
So has anyone had an actual repair cost from Sony?
