Are you wanting a Receiver with 5.1 Speaker package?? For $1500, you probably won't be able to use the PS3's full capability (sound wise)! ie. Blu-ray movies use Dolby TrueHD & dts-HD!

BTW, with HDMI inputs, you only next to plug in your PS3 (via HDMI cable) into the receiver while the receiver is plugged into your LCD TV (via HDMI)...which means you can only play your PS3 when the receiver is turned 'on'!

As for your budget, you can do some research at JB or Harver Norman. Tell them your buget, tell them what package you want and what you'll use it for. Some receivers are better for movies, others for music! Try to stick to well established brands! For quality.

Yeah the guys at Sony Central kept saying that whilst trying to sell me $3-4000 sound systems when I bought my 52" Bravia X.

But really at the moment I'd just be happy with a high quality surround system set-up coming from an experience of two speaker stereo, without going to 7.1 and hd sound at this stage.

So I would have to go hdmi into the tv first and then hdmi out from the tv into the receiver?

That Yamaha is actually pretty cool! But I'm worried about the 90w per channel will that distort if I start playing music loudly?

Here's a tip: I'd hold on a bit and wait for all the end of financial year sales in both commercial retailers & specialists! Also, AV specialists sell second-hand sound systems for good price and would not sell those if they were in bad conditions! (think of them as luxury car re-sellers ie. Audi, BMW, Mercs, etc.)

As for the Yamaha, real output power produced will actually considerably less than 90w per channel! Don't really know how to explain this properly, but if you take the wattage output written on the back of the receiver near where the power plug goes in to & devide it by 5 (as in a 5.1ch receiver)...you'll actually get less than 90w per channel! That's because it can only output the maximum power if you're only using 1 channel, otherwise it's just sharing 5 speaker power out of the receiver!

I have a sony bravia, they have a speaker on each side of the screen (2), I also have some logitech 2.1 speakers and they are connected by the normal headphone jack to my bravia and can play while the Bravia speakers are playing. Is there anyway that I can combine the tv's speakers with my 2.1 speakers to simulate/make a 4.1 sound system. I probably won't be able to, but it dosn't hurt to ask

It's just like ur tv with HDMI...it's got it, but if a console doesn't then you won't see it work the way it's suppose to! Confused?

You need a Receiver that has Repeaters - one HDMI cable will cover both pic&sound. Switchers - 1x HDMI for video & 1x normal cable for sound! BUT, if you have a Receiver with v1.3a HDMI compatibility, then you cover for video/sound/1080p/HD sound all in one HDMI cable!

Mid-range to hi-end Receivers have v1.3a built-in.

For mid-range: Onkyo, Yamaha, Marantz are good (Onkyo/Yamaha share very similar component inside)

Though pricing is getting up to the stratosphere here! And that's just the receiver! Good speakers will cost just as much as the Receiver itself!!!

For hi-end range: Pioneer, Sony (only their top of the range is best)

Onkyo are good once u get up around the $1800 range for just the reciver amp no speakers , there budget packages that include speakers suck imo

Your TV only has HDMI in, so it will only accept a signal, not send it out.

I have my PS3 hooked up to the TV via HDMI, and connected to the speakers via the optical cable. If you are only getting a 5.1 system, I don't believe the HDMI would make any difference over optical.

For this price, they are a damn fine option, not something I'll be replacing until Logitech bring out there next versions. I used to have Syntax speakers (floor standing at front, and smaller, wall mounted at rear) and a Sony receiver, but even with all the same branded speakers I found they didn't match tonally, whereas these all work great together.

guys... i would suggest NOT buying the logitech z5500 speakers just yet. logitech have tried using a new fuse in the system, which shorts whenever you turn them off and hence, rendering the speakers useless.

i bought my set in nov last year, and after replacing the set 4 times, i finally gave them in for a refund 2 weeks ago. don;t get me wrong, they sound fantastic for $400, but the current sets are annoyingly faulty!

hugo, Onkyo are known to be pretty good, despite not having a big brand name known on the mainstream market. like what the others have said here, try listening to some sets at the shops to see if its to your liking before purchasing

yeah i found it really strange as well.. but the guy at the shop told me its only with the newer sets. i have 2 friends that have had it for more than a year, and no problems whatsoever. i guess its safer to wait til that issue is sorted than to try your luck and buy it now. trust me, its quite frustrating having to unpack and then repack the huge woofer and everything else numerous times

2 points that are waaaay off target. as long as a receiver can take audio via hdmi, it can take advantage of blu ray movies, because the ps3 sends these via pcm, so you dont need the amp to decode the bitstreamed audio.

dont ever, ever listen to what the budgies at JB or harvey norman tell you - chances are they will point you to a system that there is a bonus for selling that month.

My advice would be to build your system up slowly. get a nice amp like a yamaha 1800 or 663/863 or onkyo 705, and buy a cheapy set of speakers like those dream ones from ebay.

Like FD said, you should spend a shtload more on speakers than the amp, and getting a good amp from the start gives you a good base so you dont have to touch that for a while as you upgrade around it.

once youve got your amp take your time and listen to as many speakers as possible in shops running off your amp (there should be plenty with either of those 2). see what you like the sound of, and start by buying the front 2 and go from there (as the budget al
