But what would you do if you looked up into the sky on that day (21st December 2012) and they're was a comet heading straight for earth??

The polar winds protect us from fallout in S.A. and with no worth while targets for half the country, it would have to be a cataclysmic war perminatly covering the planet in a dust cloud to end life.
