Heya guys and gals...i know there are a few discussions on this topic but they didnt really help out with my issue.
I use Telstra Wireless at home on the laptop, with the wireless modem connected to the laptop through the usb BUT what i want to know is:
how do i get me PS3 to share that wireless connection so i can get online?
I realise this is probably a real noob question but any info would be greatly appreciated...

Cheers
Luke

Is there a space for an ethernet cable on the wireless modem?

You need to to set up a new small home network on windows, and enable internet sharing. For this to work your gunna need a ethernet cable and a router/switch or hub of some sort.

There are no ports on the wireless modem at all....only a slot for the usb...

Thats why you need a router or hub. You have to run a ethernet cable from the pc to the ps3.

Your gunna at least need a router and or a network card in your pc. It works that you share the internet from your pc to the ps3 via the network card and cable and router. If your modem was a ethernet modem, all you would need would be a router and a extra cable.

Whats a router exactly?? what price would i be looking at for either a network card or a router??
With a network card, wouldnt i than have to sign up on a plan of some sort for it to work?? Does the router connect to my laptop than i run another cable to the PS3??

guys i think alot of people are misunderstanding what he has got, his laptop is connected by telstra wireless internet. which is not the same as 802.11x home wireless network.

the ps3s wireless will detect a home wireless network, or connect to the internet through en ethernet connection. It won't connect to bigpond wireless broadband.

you might be able to have your laptop connected as per normal, then using a network switch or router, have your laptop connected to the playstation, and set you laptop to share it's internet connection over ethernet. buggered if i know how to set that one up though.

and for that to work you pc needs a network card. Network cards are pretty cheap less than 50 dollars, and a router will be pretty inexpensive. if your not going to use a router then the cable has to be like a null moodem cabel. If your using a router then a normal network cable is used. A router acts like a traffic controller. It takes the internet connection from your pc and then splits it up to where it needs to go.For lots more info on internet sharing, go to windows help and type in internet sharing, and it will tell you how to set up the pc end.

i started off using that, you CAN actually just connect an ethernet cable to the ps3 and it will recognise it....as long as you set the bigpond connection settings in your pc to "share internet connection"

only prob with BP wireless is the Gigs are way too little and too expensive. if you want to download demo's from the store......hell, even if you have more than say three games that might need constant patches.....you will find yourself going way over limit.

i have since changed to BP home cable with a 60g cap, and i still go over that cap most months

edit - if you want to get out of your contract and maybe even get cable installed for free, just do what i did after a couple of weeks or a month and call them up, say that you went into a Telstra store and simply asked the person whats the best thing to get for your ps3 and say they pointed you straight to wireless broadband. they will say that the person gave you the waaay wrong advice and then offer you many discounts for switching your service. they did all that for me plus the first two months of cable free

just get what i have... Wifi Link usb from Ebay... when you have it install the driver n program... then set your pc or laptop up as a wireless access point with the program it came with and share your internet connection in the network connections window... then set your ps3 to find the wireless connection in network settings on the ps3 and your done... its pretty easy when i figured it all out, even got mine now to go throught the uni proxy server so im gettin supa fast PSN connections...

if you get the wifi link usb let me know i can help ya out...

Apparently Telstra Wireless will not allow you to share its connection...and im not able to get broadband in my area as we have just built in a new estate and we only have optic fibre cables in our area!!

Our house is too far from the phone exchange to connect ADSL so we are stuck with wireless for now

woah hang on 'ONLY' have optic fibre cables? optical is the FASTEST connection possible, you should talk to your ISP about what they offer for fibre connections and if it's possible, if you could get on there you would have lightning fast net, and no problems hooking up.

other than that, what cassone said sounds like the cheapest option for you, and pretty straight forward. using your pc as an access point if you can get your BP to share.

you can do it though, trust me, i did it for 2 1/2 months......and you DONT need a router or anything, just a ethernet cable.

in your list of connections, you dont go into your bigpond one to share it, you first connect your ps3 by ethernet, then it will recognise it as "new network" or whatever. then it's in the settings of THAT ONE that you have to tick the share internet connection box, and it works just fine. after that you set up your stuff in your console, on automatic it should work.....it WAS a year ago, but from memory, that all you have to do

yep.. that sounds about right to me.

however if it's just a direct cable to the ps3 wouldn't you need a crossover cable? one way to find out I guess.. try it.

Well i tried it and it said there was a conflict with the IP address...Telstra wirelss does not always use the same IP address when connecting.
I phoned telstra and they assured me that even with a network card or router, i would not be able to share this wireless connection as it does not allow it!!

I have already phoned up every provider i could think of but none of them run internet off optic fibre so wireless is literally my only option

Thanks for the link buddy but Telstra Wireless cant be used as a home network...therefore 802.11x is useless in trying to share this connection. But thanks again

well it look sliek you have a predicament then.

sattelite broadband would get you on the PSN, but I would expect it would be useless for online gaming, and its too expensive.

That's the shame about the fibre, what a waste to haev so muchpotential and not be using it. what is the fibre used for?
