if you can do a proper backup, then restore the data when you get your new console, all your shared games and stuff will just be there again without having to do anything

Well, just go to Settings>Backup Utility and do a backup through there.

The PS3 won't do a proper restore if you're restoring to a different PS3 though ...

It will only restore the game data, PSN games etc etc if it's being restored to the SAME Playstation 3.

No point in backing up then.

Just deactivate your account. Backup your game saves, pictures, music, videos.

You're gonna have to redownload all those PSN games when you get your replacement PS3.

ohh man are u serious? so that means we should also like, make notes of all our different psn accounts and their sign-in email addresses and everything like that too right? unless you dont mind losing some accounts of course....

I don't know for sure ... but I'm guessing that you'll need their account details again to deactivate your current console ...

So that you can download it again (after borrowing their account AGAIN) on your new replacement PS3 ...

Hi all, just new but seems like the right place to comment with a heading like this. My PS3 died last night for the second time. First was a year ago but luckily it was still in warranty just. Both have had the same failure. Blu ray stops reading. Mine are 60 gig so its not just the 40 that I read somewhere. I am getting the laser assy and going to fit myself. Wish me luck!
I may have COD4 withdrawl before I'm finished.

I changed the laser assy and it has fixed the problem but it was not as easy as I thought. Turns out when you go to reassemble the two halves of the plastic case the contains the drive, if you tilt it the wrong way one of the little plastic levers does not locate in the right place. This causes the drive to accept discs but not to spin them or eject them. This took me a few hours to figure out so hope this helps someone in the future.

I have a question ... and I hope someone knows the answer lol.
Have you guys noticed how when you insert a disc, some PS3s accept it 'straight-in' but some 'spins as it goes in'?

Is it because of the KES410 and KES400AAA lasers that Sony uses?

I'm assuming the newer one (KES410) makes the disc spin as you insert it?

I noticed the trend, because:
1. My American MGS LE PS3 spins the disc when inserted
2. My American 60GB PS3 accepts the disc 'straight-in' i.e. no spin
3. My Australian 40GB PS3 (before it died) accepted discs 'straight-in'
4. My Australian 40GB PS3 (refurbished replacement from Sony in Blacktown), spins the disc when inserted.

Interesting or what? xD
