Playstation 3 Hardware \ Strange Yellow Light!?

Ok first of all, this only happened this afternoon. My Playstation 3 wouldn't read any discs, i thought it was just the game and tried another, but no, same thing again, the Playstation 3 doesnt read the disc and the screen stays on the XMB format. So i try restarting it by pulling the plug from the wall and switching off the PS3 from the back, i've tried this maybe 8 times now. Same old same old, still doesn't register my discs. And now i am getting this yellow light which is flashing all the time, i have never seen this happen before and no matter what i try, i cant even get the XMB menu up anymore, it just gives me a black screen. I am fearing the worst so badly right now but trying to stay positive, might just be temporary right? Or am i up for a new one? Would this error be caused from transferring music from my ipod into the PS3's hard drive? Could that have an effect on it? I tried restarting again but since i've got the yellow flashing blinker i cant get anything working. I can't find my manual so i'm unsure to what this error could be? Please do any of you have any suggestions at all?

Sounds like your gonna have to ring Sony to arrange for it to be sent back for a replacement.

Are you sure? Does it cost anything? And how long would it take them to recieve, fix and send it back?

Sony has extended the warranty for the PS3 recently due to the amount of consoles having laser issues so your console should be under warranty still as people here with launch 60gb PS3 consoles have had theirs replaced or fixed for nothing even after their warranty was suppose to be over.

You contact sony who will give you instructions on how to send it back to them, expect to be without your ps3 for up to 4 weeks.

SONY pay for the postage cost & the repair/replacement is free.

Yeah mine would still be under warranty, only purchased it last month. Its just such a tough thing to take when you spend so much on something that dies in a mere few weeks. I'm fine with the 4 weeks repair time that is required, as i dont use it too frequently. But can they absolutely assure me that i wont suffer from anymore problems with it? I mean say if they fix it, send it back and then three weeks later, it dies again. I dont want this to become some habit. Sorry about the constant questions, just like to know where i stand i guess. Thanks for your help. I probably could have saved myself alot of time and asking if i actually kept the manual in its box lol.

Its impossible to say it wont happen again, Ive had my ps3 for about a year & havent had one single issue & I hope it stays that way, some people have had the exact same problem you have had after 15 months, some only after a couple weeks like yourself. You just got unlucky I guess.

That's right this is the equivalent of Xbox 360's 'RROD', the infamous "Yellow Light of Death!"

Here are some Youtube videos of the 'Yellow Light of Death'!

www.youtube.com/

Not sure if this is true, found it in a forum:

'sigh' people. try learning what the Yellow light actually means.. either or HDD has slipped out of place. So try and actually take the HDD out, and put it back in. it has worked for most people (so see, there's a chance nothing is wrong) .. and of course. 2) you just suck at taking care of it, i mean "collecting dust" ... that's not "taking care of it", that's the complete opposite

Thanks everyone for your support, it does help and i do appreciate it!

Well i sent my Playstation 3 away earlier today, so im hoping i get it back within the 4 week bracket that it usually takes for SONY to recieve, repair and send it back. Hoping! Fingers crossed lol.

Just a thought that crossed my mind though regarding the error i had with it. I had my PS3 placed in a T.V cabinet, it was a pretty confined space, is it possible that the reason i got that yellow light was because the PS3 wasn't out in the open? Maybe the vents were collecting too much dust which effected the interior of the console maybe? I've been reading bits and pieces from people who have suffered a similar problem by having their consoles stuffed in a closed in area. Could this be what caused mine to go out the way it did? Or is it just a hardware blunder or something else that causes that yellow indicater to flash on?

Thanks for any info!

Its a good chance that it overheated because of being in the cabinet, I have my PS3 on a open shelf along with the Wii & ive taken the backing off the shelf (it was all part of a bookcase) so it has plenty of air circulating around both consoles.

Just dont tell SONY if they ask LOL

I'm not sure, but to be sure I would keep it in a open area when you get it back from S0NY to stop it from happening again

So if the console overheats, that light automatically comes on? If thats the case, then this is sort of self inflicted. Thats abit embarrassing actually lol. I just figured that if it overheats, it will cool down and will play again, didnt know it would destroy the entire console. You positive it was ONLY an overheating issue?

I certainly will be doing that, learn from your mistakes so to speak lol.

I dont mean to shovel you questions guys, just trying to get a clear thought on how it could be prevented next time, if it can be prevented that is. Thanks again

well I think it was pointed out earlier in the thread that its not the laser as it doesnt do the yellow light, it just wont read discs, the yellow light suggests overheating as pointed out by MyPS3 member S0NY

anyone try to see if its the hdd like mentioned earlier? as for over heating options i still kinda find it hard to belive that overheating would damage the ps3. Would sony relise such a system if it had overheating issues? i am sure they would have flooged it out in some pretty hot rooms for this reason. My ps3 sits alone on a stand but i have noticed during winter and the heater going flat out that the ps3 seems to have a thermal fan that kicks in when my room gets too hot. It sounds like a jumbo winding up lol, but if i turn the heater off and wait a minute or two the ps3 resumes normall fan speed. I just cant see sony knowing relising the ps3 knowing people would send them back for simple overheating issues. Thats just my opion.
Maybe we should start a thread with Troubleshooting. Locked thread saying yellow light means - possible hdd failure
error blah balh means - blah blah etc...

Overheating can do lot of damages by the way...it's will make PS3 to freeze and turn it self off, before I was place my PS3 in a cabinet area, then I can feel the heat everything when I changes disc.

So better off leave the PS3 in a open area
