ey guys,
just wanting to know what my best option would be, either stream content from another pc or install a larger hdd into my ps3.
Does the new 40gb PS3 released in Aus have the facility to transfer files from one removable hard drive to the ps3 hard drive such as music, pictures and movies??

What i do is to copy mpegs or divx files to a external hard drive formatted as fat 32 and just copy them to the ps3 hard drive

I hate streaming media. I'm so impatient, I can't wait for the few seconds for it to open the video/music 
I copy my fav stuff to my PS3 HDD. I bought a Western Digital 250GB HDD

my wd ehdd works but not as well as you'd need to depend on it.
The ps3 takes half hour to read and access the contents.
And yes it's formatted in FAT32

hugo, are you taking about a 1TB hdd or a 500gb HDD, being 1TB i can imagine it would take so long to access it.

it's only 320, and the thing that annoys me is plug it into the pc every file is instantly accessible, through the ps3 it seriously takes half hour...

What annoys me is YES, the ps3 takes ages to read and sort my mpeg files on my 200Gb EHDD and also how when acessed the little gif image of the file is just that, an image, the file doesnt play the first 10 seconds, similair to how it does if the file is actually saved to the ps3.

If you use SATA it shouldn't be as slow as USB. Just buy the HD Extenders if 2.5" drives are out of your budget.

just picked up a WD 250GB Passport External Drive from HN for $237 today, so will take it home and open the bugger up and replace the PS3 HDD with this one.
i've read its SATA, so praying that its not an IDE interface lol.
will let you guys know how i go when its all up and running

ok guys my PS3 is back up and running with all my goodies restored and a brand spanking new 250GB HDD in it now. Now i'll never need to worry about running out of space for all my music/movies/demos - well not for a while anyway.
wutang01, the drive inside is a SATA drive that is just hooked up to the USB connector. I openned it up and swapped out the old 60GB drive in the PS3. Now the PS3s 60GB drive is in the Passport case

wutang01 thats is the drive i used.
what i did with my existing 60GB Drive was chuck it in the WD Passport case, so now i got a sweet portable HDD as well as a 250GB PS3.
i have to mention that i take no responsibility if you break anything whilst pulling apart the passport. I took my time and everything went smoothly.
just an update,
only started to try and use my external drive in my WD passport case and having a few problems
doesn't seem to power up the drive, but im looking around for a fix...

Anyone know a trust worthy well priced online computer shop where I'd get a hdd from?
Wait a minute nhutty, are you suggesting if I open up my external drive I can take out the drive in it and use it inside the ps3?
The bitch is I'll lose all my stuff on it when I reformat grrr

Id just get a new HDD rather than atemtimg to break your old one. Just look on the internet for a 2.5inch laptop SATA drive.

Snickers I've ordered a WD 2.5" SATA 5400 8mb cache 250gb for $215 from Tasmanian Principle Computers, had to request it specifically as they don't normally carry it. $215 cheaper than Hitachi in the same specs!
