Playstation 3 Hardware \ Problem with my PS3?

Hi guys,

Just got what i think could be a fault with my PS3. I've had the console for a few months now and there has been this minor problem since i got it.

I have the 40GB PS3 with a Samsung Plasma TV which is connected via a HDMI cable.

When the playstation is in the main menu screen it is displayed at 1980x1080 resolution but when i play a game (only happens with some games, namely NBA 2k8) the resolution drops from 1280x720. During this drop of resolution there is significant noise on the TV screen.

I have seen this game on at my current settings played at 1980x1080 a very few times. Probably the first few times i played it.

I also have Call of Duty 4 and that game plays fine on full 1080p resolution.

Could this be the PS3? the HDMI cable? or the TV?

Any help will be very helpful!!

I just downloaded the latest update for the PS3 and the noise on the screen seems to have stopped.

The resolution drop is still there though. Happens on NBA, Tiger Woods Golf 2008 and some other games...

Any ideas?

NBA2K8 being one of these games, most of the newer games switch automatically to 1080p if supported but there arent that many 1080p games out. Its an issue with the developer of the game not supporting the automatic resolution switching and nothing at all to do with the PS3.

Most games at the moment are 720p... only a select few are actually 1080p. Look on the back of the PS3 cover - it says near the bottom what screen resolutions are supported. If it does take 1080p though it will automatically resize, otherwise if 720p is the highest then its gonna sit on that.

Yeh as other people have said it depends on the game. Some games do suport 1080p and some only go to 720p. It just depends how good the developer who is making the game is at programing for the PS3. But I wouldnt worry about it. the games look fine at 720p any way so just have fun and dont worry about it

Harvey norman are offering to loan me a 40gig till then , or replace mine with a 40 gig, plus the extra $300 in difference,, eg. extra games or a PSP.
Is the repaired 60 gig worth waiting for, or do i just go with a brand new 40 gig???
