Hey guys,
I'm new to all this online stuff having only had my PS3 for just over a week. Can any one explain what I need to get my two computers (Laptop & Desktop) and my PS3 all running off the one wireless internet connection.
I have a current broadband connection but don't have wireless set up yet... what do I need to purchase? a router? I don't even really understand what a router is!
excuse my ignorance.

a wireless router laptop should have wireless built in like PS3 and u might have to buy a wirless USB thingy for your desktop. and again it might have it

That sounds easy enough, can anyone recommend a good wireless router?
Would I experience any drop out of internet connection with wireless running to 3 different systems?

Shouldn't, unless it's a particularly cheap and crap router. Probably be willing to pay about $100 for one of those, and about $40 for a wireless adaptor for your desktop. No reason why you can't still have a wired connection to your desktop though
Something like this will do the trick:

Billion are a great brand mate, you can't go wrong with any of their wireless routers. When you unpack and set it up, make sure you read in the manual on how to secure your connection through SSID (Service Set Identifier) A fancy name for a password to gain access to your wireless LAN. Otherwise any bastard can access your connection... iknow i can access my neighbours
lol Other than that, if your laptop and PC have the same Operating System, it'll find and connect automatically

The SSID won't be the thing providing the security for your wireless network...
Unless you're not broadcasting it, but that's another matter. What you're talking about is any one of the protocols used for password-protecting wireless networks such as WEP, WPA and WPA-TSK. You are right though in recommending that to exitmusic. I'm always amazed by how many wireless networks there are even where I live with absolutely no security on them whatsoever. Anyone can just pull up in their car or connect from their lounge room in the next block and use their internet absolutely free and without the owners even knowing 99.99% of the time. If I lived in a slightly more built-up area I wouldn't even bother paying for my internet since at least 2 or 3 people around me would be begging me to steal theirs

hmmm...it seems that you are right, you learn something new everyday
I don't have any other secuirty protocols active on my WLAN but i'll be changing that soon now, cheers!
EDIT: Done using WEP protocol
