but if you're looking to get into it blender is free and incredible!
if you wanna see what it can do, just look up the short film 'Elephants Dream'.
takes a little while to learn, bit i recomend Blender (open-source -im sure - and it's freeware

There was a program I mucked around with a while ago and it was completely open source, I forgot the name of it. Let me see if I can find it.

Also, if you just want to much around with animation you can download maya personal learning edition, which is free, but final products will have a watermark over them. (Movies like Shrek have been created using Maya)
