Social \ Satellite on roofs for free Pay TV

More and more people have been buying satellites and decoder boxes which enables people to watch almost all of the foxtel channels for free. Is this legal? Someone told me that a court ruled, if somone can pick up the signal in the air, its theirs, and its up to foxtel to secure their signal. Is this true? Foxtel is too expspensive, this could be a good option if it is legal.

Sorry to be rude but I don't want the 'pretty sure' or 'think about it' answer. I want proof, facts, and information from people who have it.

I did have a bit of a look around but couldn't find anything. At the moment, the only information I've got is by word of mouth.

My question:

Is receiving Pay TV via Satellite for free illegal?

Proof?

yeah, its more dangerous to people who sell the converter boxes and tv cards (or whatever it is that decodes the signal).

edit*

lol! Can you repeat the question is from Malcom In The Middle, the theme song for that show goes:

Yes No, Maybe.
I Dont Know.
Can You Repeat The Question?

lol, thought someone may have picked up on it. my bad.

Yes of course, I just don't want to spend $1000 or so dollars then find that they are illegal, and its kinda hard to get a satellite receiver off your roof. Its definitely not as easy as deleted a couple of vids off your computer.

there are heaps of channels floating up there that are free.. as for having a sat dish... who doesnt these days! i know u can get national geographic free before it hits the foxtel sat, but not the discovery channel. if they left it unlocked its free, BUT if you have to get a dodgy special decoder then obviously not

I dont have to provide proof , its obvious its not legal, doesnt mean you cant do it thou. Foxtels signal is scrambled & you need a card & box to recieve this signal, when foxtel first started up (originally known as Galaxy TV) these cards were fairly simple to obtain but then Foxtel took over & changed the technology so it was harder to illegally obtain the signal but recently (not sure for how long but there was a length of time where it couldnt be done) the illegal market has started up again as Im assuming they have managed to crack the codes or whatever it is. Im happy to keep paying for it legally as they provide a good service, foxtel keeps the missus busy so I can play PS3

Somone told me (as I said in the first post) that a judge ruled:

If foxtel is sending the channel to people and they are decodable, thats foxtels problem, not the people who sell or buy these decoders. I can't seem to find it anywhere on the internet tho. Hoping one of you guys can back your answers with some cold hard evidence

I know it seems illegal, but as I said in my last post, there is nothing (I can find) on the internet and someone I know quite well who pays for foxtel said that a judge ruled it legal and foxtels problem to secure their signal.

Common, isn't there anybody with evidence

Why dont you ring up foxtel & ask them if its legal LOL

Look at it this way, IF it was legal, within 2 weeks of such a ruling being made, the word would be out & everyone would be investing in these satelite dishes & boxs, simple as that. The fact that its not in the papers & not common knowledge suggests that it is in fact ILLEGAL, you want evidence then ask someone in TV land.

i know in the cities where there are heaps of asians they all have their own dishes and that...to pick up chineese/Japanese TV thats not illegal, think it depends what channels you want, but if u need a special 'foxtel' decoder then obviously its not legal

I'm sure we'll know what they're answer will be.

There just so expensive, don't get me wrong, I love foxtel, but when you work it out, youll have to be paying around $600 a year to get some decent channels. Then you have to pay extra if you want to watch Euro Cup (setanta sports) and some channels that people like arn't included in any packs and you are forced to pay extra if you want to watch them. At the moment, I'm streaming all my soccer matches, but the quality is not very good

From what Ive been told, Foxtel sends out a signal every now and then that jams the illegal decoders etc and basically destroys them... Could be wrong but it was from a pretty good source at the time.

I wish they would make a clear ruling and put it on the internet to avoid confusion. Personally, I believe authorities don't even know what to do.

This is true. My auntie and uncle got this satellite and decoder set. Two weeks later, it didn't work. It happened to almost everyone who has these satellites but within a couple of weeks, the person who installed the system, replaced the box and it now works again.

Spot on, a relative of mine used to have "free" foxtel & whenever the card was jammed they had to go back to the installer & get a new card, not too much fuss but a pain in the rear end all the same.
