Hi guys, I'm currently waiting for my PS3 (got it with the Sony LCD) and was wondering if it was worth putting the bigger HD in before i did anything.
What HD should i get? Does anyone know of where i can get them from in Melbourne?

yeah sure. if your planning to put a lot of music and movies on it.
not sure where to go in melbourne. Have a look on ebay just make sure is a 2.5" drive.

I probably wont put a lot of that stuff on it. I'll just watch movies from the com through the PS3. Is the 40G enough for games saves and downloaded games?

Should be. I think your main concern are game installs, since game installs of 1GB or 2GB have been quite common recently ...

Id say so. Game saves are tiny. i havnt got many downloaded games but they dont seem to take up a lot of space.

I put a 160Gb in mine, I have about 90Gb free, I dont store any movies at all on mine it's all just game saves/installs and demos, so yeah worth upgrading imo !

ok this might sound stupid.... errrr.. how exactly you check free HD space on ps3?

So it seems if your a heavy downloader upgrading is the way to go. Also if your planning to use custom soundtracks in games i belive you need to have them on the HDD so thats something to consider aswell.

System settings > System Information (it should be the 2nd last from the bottom)

MSY has good prices but that place is always chocka block full of people. Most times I go to CPL which isn't too far from MSY and they have good prices as well.
I'm planing to do the same thing as you and add a bigger HD.
Does anyone know what is the biggest HD you can get that suits the PS3 and has been tried and tested?

They had 320G at $119 (MSY) thats as high as they went.
As long as it's sata 2.5 5400 should be ok.

hmm just thinking about it.. this promotion probably came as a way to get rid of the 40gb ps3's (80gb coming out 27aug).. as well as the obvious incentive to get the tv of course too.. 
And upgrade, definitely upgrade. with game install becoming almost manditory, video d/l service + PlayTv, and d/l games stepping up in the market, it's well worth the investment and avoiding mucking around with the upgrade later on

Games like GTAIV, DMC4, TopSpin3, Everybodys Golf.. all 3GB+ to install.. I bought a 60GB on release thinking it would be heaps of room........ But as a raging fan of the PS3 and its games, i found myself with 12GB left only 8 months after purchase... I only had about 1G worth of audio files, 5 worth of trailers.. The rest of the space was taken up by game installs
