EDIT: PETAFLOP HAS BEEN BROKEN!!! on September 17th, 2007 the Petaflop barrier was crossed by the Folding@Home distributed computing project. The big increase in Teraflops has been pretty much a direct result of more PS3 contributors - so guys, yous are valuable to Stanfords worthy medical research project!
see my YouTube vid: www.youtube.com/
END EDIT

theres already enough info out there on what Folding@Home is - just look on your PS3 (firmware v1.6 or higher)

What we're doing over at the Folding forums forum.folding-community.org/
is organising a Foldathon! We are trying to crack the PetaFLOP mark with the combined computing power of PS3s and computers! We need as much help as possible on July 1st to achieve this never before seen figure.

Be part of history and run the Folding@Home program found in the network section of your PS3 for one FULL work unit or more (up to you) each taking 8hrs to complete, starting the morning of July 1st.

We not only hope to break the PetaFLOP mark, but also to attract more donators to the Cancer research Project run by Stanford Uni. It doesn't matter whether you run it once a day or once a week, its helping out Cancer research! only requirement is that you have 5 days from the start of the work unit to finish and return it (due to project purposes)

I encourage you all to make up your own unique username butyou could use PS3 at the end of a username to define it eg. smASHer88_PS3. If you want to join a team, you could join the MyPS3 team - just put in 60766 as the team no. or you could join my team Aussie Rules Footy, just put 52735 as the team no.

cheers guys

What a scam! If they wanted to help cure cancer they would've by now and AIDS for that matter. All of the charity organizations help their pockets not people who need it.

pirarefunk is entitled to his oppinion and thats fine, but i think if he looked into it a bit more, he mite see how great this project is (Sony would not have wasted their time if it wasn't useful)

because not all cancer research is done in labs by scientists, a lot of calculations need computer power, and thats what Folding@Home is about. Actually i just read then that Stanford is releasing new 'work units' (further research) to be calculated by PS3s and home computers, so the Project is definitely going places

cheers

i dont know, i saw a link for team 24 for Folding@Home on www.overclockers.com.au and saw what is was about and actually how many ppl were doing it and just stunned me. I had heard of Seti@Home (about aliens n crap) and i thought well this is much better, i can use my computer for couple hrs a day like normal AND be helping out cancer research at the same time without affecting my work. the reason i've targeted the PS3 forums so much is that the PS3 is so much more powerful than computers and even just a couple more thousand of these CELL powered computers Folding will enhance Stanford's research SO MUCH! and will make Sony's investment in developing the program so worthwile! So please guys, if u dont mind just puttin together 8hrs worth of Folding within 4-5 days even just once a week or a fortnight, it will REALLY HELP CANCER RESEARCH. Im so into it that i get the 'display' PS3 at work (i work at Dick Smith) folding, coz its turned on, not doin anything useful (we're lucky to get a couple of ppl a week interested in buying $1000 worth of console) so yeh just Fold on it. I really plan on getting my own soon, hopefully they'll update the PS3 into a slimmer better lookin version within a year

Cheers

But apart from the satisfaction of helping out - what do u get out of it?

Im missing something here??

Because i dont know how someone can be so enthused about something they will never actually witness first hand the actual day in day out benefits of - if u get what i mean.

yeh nah i get ya. i dont know, just i see the other donators in the folding forums and everyone is into it and helpin each other out, news is released on whats goin on with the project etc. so just really into it.

i dont really get anythin out of it, most ppl do it to donate then secondly to be either part of a team, or build their own, and im excited about building mine up. If Stanford keeps makin small breakthroughs, thats good enuff for me, once they crack it bigtime, i'll know that i helped make it happen! its just a good feeling really.

man, you've crawled under one bigass rock! simply put, Sony did not have to invest any money at all into this project, but i'd say that many months programming for a 'fake cancer research project' using up a percentage of developing resources all so they can just 'appear' to be caring? i dont think so, they've spent a lot of money they didn't have to just so the PS3 could contribute to a good cause, now stop making comments on how fake it is, if u dont like it, stop posting!
