Social \ HDMI 1080i/1080P

ps3fanboi says:

Guess what, folks... If your TV has HDMI, you CAN receive a 1080p signal! (See en.wikipedia.org/ ). That's why your PS3 works with your TV at 1080p. All TVs that support HDMI 1.0 and higher can accept 1080p60 signals. Your TV then downsamples the signal to a format it can use internally (i.e. 720p or 768p or if CRT, something interlaced).

Most "1080i" TVs are limited to 1080i over analog COMPONENT video (Y/Pb/Pr). All HDMI TVs can accept a 1080p signal even though they may not be able to display it in its "full glory." (HDMI v1.3 even adds support for 1440p, more colors, etc.)

If this is true, I'll probably go pick up a HDMI cable, then. xD

Is the forced 1080p better than 720p, though?

I have a HDMI cable running from my PS3 to my LCD TV and it shows 1080i. How do I make it 1080p then??? oh - but a Full HD TV right?

Winnie says:

Choose 1080p in the display settings? I tried it for fun using component cables and the screen went black.

But what would the benefit of that be? If the tv accepts 1080p signal and converts to 720p, then isn't it the same as having 720p?

That's true... 1080p is only good for huge screens, there'd be no point on a 26" or 32"... 720p can look much better than 1080p... do any of you guys know what screen resolution actually is? It's the number of pixels, but what they don't tell you about is the size and density, which is just as important. A $400 LCD PC monitor is far higher resolution than a top of the range $5000 HDTV. They don't want you to know that what you've got sitting right in front of you is more than sufficient. It might not have as many pixels, but that's only half of what screen resolution is. 1080p is useless on any screen smaller than 42"...

This is a first im goin to agree with you on that totally. Density is the key people

The more dots in a confined space the clearer the image.
When i run my projector in 720P i get 921,600 dots for displaying data.. Which might sound like a lot but its spred over a space of 142"

Then you move up to 1080P (1920 × 1080) which gives me a large 2,073,600 pixels to define my images. Thats well over double that of 720P. So you get a clearer image again

Entice says:

THAT IS NOT TRUE. Even though your Tv has HDMI, its native resolution may be lower than 1920x1080 - WHICH IS NOT 1080p.

In order to view 1080p your TV MUST HAVE A RESOLUTION OF 1920x1080 native, an HDMI-in, DVI or component.
