Bad ideas for consumers, because they normally suck. In terms of the production companies, they are great ideas because there are morons out there who actually spend money to go and see them. The bad trend probably started with Super Mario Bros. back in the early 90s. I have to admit that, as a kid, I loved the **** out of that film. I watched it countless number of times because I thought it was the best movie to ever come out. Considering that I probably spent about 1000+ hours playing Super Mario Bros. 3 on my NES, I guess I could be excused for being so obsessed with a film that I would finally notice was a hunk of crap about 10 years later when I re-watched it.





Clearly they didn't save the world because "The Princess" comes back at the end saying there is trouble. Thank god there isn't a sequel. Not only did they NOT save the world from going down the toilet, but they helped stuff the whole "video game-movie" genre straight into the sewers. God damn you Bob Hopskins!





Now we have the Hitman movie. I think it's gotten to a point now where they are clearly taking advantage of the public and bringing out these movies that are based on games just for the hell of it. Where is my Call of Duty movie? Or Assassin's Creed movie? or Halo movie? I mean, why make movies based on video-games that don't even do that well, critically and commerically? Hitman? Yeah, it's a cool game but the premises is hardly original. Alone in the Dark? Crap first game, decent series. Bloodrayne? OK, Uwe Boll seriously needs to be crucified infront of a world-wide audience.



There really are only two films that I believe, in a way, captured the emotion and feeling of the game they were based on.





Silent Hill got the job done in my opinion and it actually captured the environmental feeling of the games.







The Lara Croft films also, I think, were maid with high production value and stayed true to the video-games.





I've seen snipets of Hitman. To be honest, the trailers looked cool and emotional and I really like Timothy Olyphant in the role of Agent 47. But, those results on Rotten Tomatoes are terrible to say the least, and I personally can't see this film turning the tide on the whole video-game film genre. It's unfortuante, cause those trailers really did kick ass!
