Top 10 Stealth Games

With the recent release of Splinter Cell: Conviction on XBOX 360 (don't worry Playstation 3 gamers; you'll surely get to play it soon), we thought it suitable to try and create a list of the Top 10 Stealth games of all time. And it wasn't easy! While the likes of the Metal Gear Solid series take up four of the ten spots, many great games had to miss out. Sly 2: Band of Thieves is one game that was very unlucky, as was Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.

With any new list comes the expected debate and argument about the titles included, so feel free to include your own list and tell us why you think some games shouldn't have been included and why some should have been.

1. Metal Gear Solid

Hideo Kojima's groundbreaking stealth-action title for the Playstation, Metal Gear Solid, was released in 1998 to wide critical acclaim. It sold over 6 million copies worldwide and is still to this day one of the most rented video-games of all time. It is often cited as the game that popularized the stealth genre.

2. Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence

Often considered superior to Snake Eater, Subsistence offered updated versions of the series' first two games, Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, a brand-new competitive online mode, and a fully 3D, user-controlled camera in the main portion of the game, which was praised by critics. The game's online mode, Metal Gear Online was also praised as being exceptionally good for a PS2 online experience.

3. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

Considered as one of the best games of all time and having received many perfect scores from critics, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots may very well be the most technically flawless game ever made. Everything from its graphics, to sound and voice-acting, to the solid, albeit complex, gameplay, make Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots one of the most fascinating and spectacular gaming experiences this generation.

4. Hitman 2: Silent Assassin

Selling more than 3.7 million copies, Hitman: Silent Assassin is one of the most commercially successful games in the franchise. It received generally very favorable reviews, with the PC version mostly rated as being on-par with the console versions.

5. Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven

Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven is the third game in the Tenchu series which took place a year after the events of Tenchu: Stealth Assassins. The Playstation 2 version was generally well received, although the XBOX version, which included graphical improvements, two new multiplayer characters, two new single player missions, extra special moves, and the ability to go online with the versus and co-op multiplayer modes, was heavily criticised, but still received decent-to-good reviews.

6. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell

Set in the fall of 2004, the player takes on the role of Sam Fisher, a long-dormant secret agent called back to duty by the American National Security Agency, to work with a secret division dubbed "Third Echelon". Splinter Cell is often considered the first great Western stealth game in that it was made by a Western developer in Ubisoft Montreal. The gameplay and graphics, especially the lighting, were praised by critics around the world.

7. Hitman: Codename 47

Hitman: Codename 47 is the first canonical entry in the Hitman series of video games. Developed by the Danish IO Interactive in Denmark and released by Eidos Interactive in 2000 for Microsoft Windows, it remains the only PC-exclusive Hitman game. The story centers around Agent 47, a bald test subject branded with a barcode tattooed on the back of his head, who is rigorously trained in methods of murder. Being the first game in the series, it's unique story and dark themes hit the right note with gamers and critics alike.

8. Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops

One of the PSP's premier AAA titles, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops brought a genuine console stealth experience to a handheld for the first time. Set in 1970 in South America, six years after the events of Snake Eater, the game follows the exploits of Naked Snake after his former unit, FOX, goes renegade. Critics around the world praised its gameplay and graphics, taking consideration into the limitations the PSP hardware has. Overall, the experience offered is amazing, and is quite easily one of the best titles available on the PSP.

9. Thief: Deadly Shadows

Thief: Deadly Shadows is a first-person and third-person 'sneaker', similar in gameplay to the previous games in the series. The player takes the role of a Garrett, an independent master thief who aims to steal his way through the City, using stealth, devices and weapons, in order to complete objectives and make profits on the side. The game was universally praised for its graphics, namely its lighting effects, as well as its solid gameplay.

10. Hitman: Contracts

While not as well received as earlier entries in the Hitman franchise, Contracts offers the most challenge of its two predecessors. While its high difficulty was the most criticised of its problems, many fans of the genre still consider it to be one of the best in the franchise, mainly because it includes reworked levels from earlier games but with more of a challenge.
